For years, scientists have struggled to explain waters existence on earth. Their best theory is that it was alien — that comets laden with ice hit the earth filling our oceans.
However, there is a new theory gaining ground that confirms the Biblical account. Geologists last year found a diamond that suggested deep beneath the earth’s surface there are massive oceans of water.
This is exactly what the Bible says. We are told in Genesis 1, that when God formed the earth he created waters above and below (Genesis 1:7). In fact, the water below was a major source of the water used to fill the earth during Noah’s flood when the fountains of the deep exploded gushing water to the earth’s surface.
In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on the same day all the fountains of the great deep burst open, and the floodgates of the sky were opened. (Genesis 7:11 NASV)
In 2014, scientists from the University of Alberta were in Brazil researching the dating of diamonds. They discovered a unique diamond that came from the earth’s mantle that encompasses an area between 410 kms to 660 kms (254 miles to 410 miles) below the earth’s surface.
They believed the diamond was coughed to the surface by a volcano. Because it had come from such depths, the battered diamond was virtually worthless, nevertheless the group had to pay $20 for the rock discovered by miners in 2008.
When they studied the diamond, they found it contained a mineral called ringwoodite. This was the first time anyone had discovered the rare element on the earth’s surface. Previous samples had only been found in meteorites.
Further, the diamond’s ringwoodite sample contained 1.5% water in the form of hydroxide ions. The mineral’s unique structure gives it a sponge-like quality.
It is now believed there are massive areas of ringwoodite circling the earth’s inner core containing water.
In his University of Alberta news release, Pearson said:
“It translates into a very, very large mass of water, approaching the sort of mass of water that’s present in all the world’s oceans.”
I had earlier reported on study by seismologists from the University of New Mexico who using seismic scans concluded the ringwoodite below had water in it.
That study suggested if just 1% of this mineral held water it would contain three times more H2O than the earth’s oceans.
Brandon Schmandt, a co-author of that study, said if this water ever made it to the surface it would leave mountains with only their tips sticking out. Of course that was based on only 1% of the ringwoodite being water, the diamond had 1.5%.
During Noah’s flood the water covered all the earth including the mountains — with the exploding fountains from the deep aided by an incessant rain lasting 40 days and night. Because of its depth, the water in the ringwoodite is under tremendous pressure.
18 The water prevailed and increased greatly upon the earth, and the ark floated on the surface of the water. 19 The water prevailed more and more upon the earth, so that all the high mountains everywhere under the heavens were covered. (Genesis 7:18 NASV)
Though the Biblical flood waters eventually receded, not all of it did. Today we are finding evidence of that flood with massive forests and even human settlements found at the bottom of our oceans and seas.
