Half the people watching ‘The Chosen’ are not Christians, survey finds

According to recent data, nearly half the people who are watching the popular TV series The Chosen, are not Christians, Christian Headlines reports. The popular series, now in its fourth season, depicts the life of Jesus and His disciples as recorded in the Gospels. Its popularity is due in part to the show’s portrayal of the disciples as real people complete with the foibles that plague us all. In an interview with Christian Headlines, The Chosen VP Katherine Warnock said that survey data revealed that half of those watching, “were either practicing Christians or cultural Christians. And then the other half were either curious about Christianity or just no Christian faith. And we were deeply surprised about that” She added that the same data also showed that a significant percentage of viewers were Gen Z or younger, which was again surprising since they expected it to appeal to an older audience. Warnock also added that there was even a split between male and female viewership.

‘The Chosen’ ranked as the third most-watched series on Prime Video US

Angel Studio not only has a hit movie, Sound of Freedom, tearing up the box office in theaters across America, one of its TV series, The Chosen, is doing the same thing on PrimeVideo, God TV reports. The Chosen, the first season of this down-to-earth portrayal of Jesus and His disciples was created in 2017 and quickly became popular among Christians. With actor Jonathan Roumie playing Christ, it closely follows the story of Jesus recorded in the Gospels. However, it portrays the disciples as quirky and fallible adding a sense of realism and humor to the story. According to a recent Instagram Post, after being picked up on PrimeVideo, it is now the third most-watched multi-series show on the popular streaming platform. And with its viewership numbers still climbing, the producers commented, “we’re coming for you, Jim, Er, Jack,” which may be a veiled reference to Prime’s popular TV series, Jack Ryan. The widely acclaimed Christian TV series, ‘The Chosen’, which presents a realistic, down-to-earth portrayal of the life of Jesus and the disciples, will soon be streamed into 300 US prisons, CBN reports. Prison Fellowship, America’s largest prison ministry, has partnered with the Come and See Foundation allowing the multi-season TV series to potentially reach 50,000 inmates in 38 states. According to Angel Studios, ‘The Chosen’s’ distributor, the popular multi-season TV series has already been viewed 500 million times by over 108 million people. Because of overwhelming interest, the season finale of The Chosen, a TV series based on the life of Jesus, will have an extended stay in theaters, the Daily Wire reports. Season three’s final two episodes, 7 and 8, were scheduled to play in selected theaters across America on Feb 2 and Feb 3, however, because of interest CBN is reporting that this will now be extended to Feb 6. The finale will feature one of the major Gospel stories, the feeding of the 5,000. When the first two episodes of Season 3 aired in 2,012 theaters in November 2022, they were the third most watch movie in America that weekend, grossing $8.7 million. It finished behind, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and The Menu which were seen in over 3,000 theaters that same weekend, but was ahead of Disney productions. The Chosen is a multi season TV series on the life of Jesus portrayed in the Gospels. Each episode focuses on one of the stories. Now in its third season, the first two episodes were released as a special-screening in 2,012 theaters across the US this past weekend. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the show shocked Hollywood as it grossed $8,7 million on its first weekend, and ended up as the third most watched movie. Leading the way was Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, with $67.3 million on its second weekend of viewing. Second place fell to another new release, a comedy-horror movie called The Menu, which had $9 million in sales, but was viewed in 3,211 theaters, a third more than The Chosen. The Chosen beat out releases by such Hollywood franchises as Disney, Universal and DC Comics. It also outsold, She Said that covered the exposure of notorious Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein by New York Times reporter Jodi Cantor.
