When the Holy Spirit falls upon people: Ex-gay Hollywood designer explains how this helped lead him to Jesus

We read throughout the Bible of times that the Holy Spirit fell upon people and each time something unusual happened as there were outward manifestations:

  • When the Holy Spirit fell upon Samson, the rope that he was bound with fell off him (Judges 15:13-14);
  • After the Holy Spirit fell upon Balaam, who had been hired to curse Israel, he ended up blessing Israel (Numbers 24:1-6).

As we move into the New Testament, there is a shift because of Christ’s perfect redemption the Holy Spirit is now able to permanently reside inside us (1 Corinthians 6:19).

But there were still instances of the Holy Spirit falling upon people, as took place on the Day of Pentecost. The same thing happened to a group of gentiles at the home of Cornelius as Peter was preaching. The Holy Spirit also fell on them, and they began speaking in tongues:

15 As I [Peter] began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as on us at the beginning. (Acts 11:15 ESV).

When the Holy Spirit falls upon people, something invariably happens, and a similar event laid the groundwork for Becket Cook, a Hollywood designer, to become a Christian, Faithwire reports.

Becket was an influential designer in Hollywood, and had worked for major stars such as Oprah, Paris Hilton and Katy Perry. Becket was also gay and an atheist.

In a recent episode of his podcast, “The Becket Cook Show”, Becket interviewed Joy Durham-Schafer, a Christian model, who played a significant role in Becket’s journey to Christ, planting what he described as a seed in his heart.

He first me Joy, who had just accepted Jesus, on a set in 2004. She was the first Christian he had ever met in Hollywood, a concept Becket described as ‘gross’.

At the time, Joy was dating a non-Christian man by the name of Frankie, who Becket was also friends with.

Joy realized that because Frankie wasn’t a Christian, their relationship couldn’t go anywhere, and she needed to break it off.

And then Frankie spoke to Beckett about what happened during their break-up, and this planted a seed in him as Frankie described how the Holy Spirit had fallen upon Joy.

“[Frankie] told me the story of you breaking up with him and he said you collapsed on the floor and you were weeping. And he went to hug you and he said he could feel like the Holy Spirit on you. He sensed something supernatural was going on.”

“It was a frequency and a vibration of the Spirit moving and indwelling in me,” Joy added. “I was so completely transformed. I didn’t even know who I was anymore.”

“I remember when he told me that story it was, maybe, the first spark of me thinking… ‘There must be something real to this kind of Christianity-thing.’ …It definitely planted a seed in me.”

As all this was happening, ten years earlier, Kim Cook, his sister-in-law, who was also a Christian, believed the Holy Spirit was leading her to pray for Becket. She didn’t judge his lifestyle and continued to love him and pray for him.

In 2009, a stranger Becket met at a coffee shop invited him to attend a Hollywood church called Reality LA.

With the ground having been prepared by his sister-in-law’s prayer, the seed that the Holy Spirit had planted through Joy, sprouted, and Beckett believed in Jesus for his salvation on September 9, 2009, at the service.

Eight years later, he would graduate from Talbot School of Theology with a Master of Arts in Theology.

Becket has since written a book about his journey to Christ, entitled, A Change of Affection: A Gay Man’s Incredible Story of Redemption.
