“You are not to say, ‘It is a conspiracy!’
Regarding everything that this people call a conspiracy,
And you are not to fear what they fear or be in dread of it. (Isaiah 8:12 NASV)

In a recent interview with CBS Sunday Mornings on his upcoming sci-fi movie, “Disclosure Day”, director Steven Spielberg made comments that caused Christians to react.

The movie opens today, Friday, June 12. It’s about Margaret Fairchild, a Kansas City meteorologist, played by Emily Blunt. She is trying to release secret information about Alien life that has been covered up by governments.

In the process, she not only questions government structures but even her own faith.

Spielberg believes that the discovery of life on other planets will impact the religious beliefs of people around the world, Church Leaders reported.

And the movie also takes the position of the church”, Spielberg said. “What does this do to the fundamental beliefs that many of us have? Is God our God only on this planet, or is God a God for every system where there’s civilization, intelligent life, and even developing life?

Over the years, the Oscar-winning director has not shied away from expressing his belief in alien life. This theme has also appeared in earlier films such as “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” “War of the Worlds,” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”

There’s pockets that, of course, are conspiracy theories”, Spielberg said. “But the actual idea that we have been under observation and [are] being interacted with is something that I have kind of always hung on to as a core truth.”

Based on the circumstantial evidence of everything that I’ve gathered throughout my whole life and everybody I’ve listened to,” Spielberg added, “and every documentary I’ve ever watched and all the testimonies in Congress that I’ve heard, I absolutely think that [alien beings] have been here, and they are here, and, who knows, maybe they’ve always been here.”

The Daily Mail reports that Spielberg’s suggestion that the discovery of alien life will disrupt Christian beliefs was quickly disputed on social media.

We’ve had 70 years of sci-fi movies with aliens. I think Christians will survive this movie with their faith intact,’ wrote one user on X.

Catholic nuns play important roles in the movie. YouTuber Ryan Pitterson saw an early release of this film. He described one scene where a former novice nun (nun in training) is sitting across a table from an alien being played by Colin Firth.

Firth is using alien technology to project in spirit form to this woman, through which he is also able to control the former nun. He is trying to get her to release the location of her boyfriend.

Though she is being controlled and influenced by this alien, which Pitterson likens to demonic possession, the nun is trying to fight it. She is clutching the crucifix so hard her hand starts bleeding.

The alien repeats a passage from Luke where Jesus is praying in the Garden of Gethsemane for strength to do God’s will, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.

Firth basically quotes part of this passage to compel the former nun to reveal the information.

Controlled by this alien technology, the former nun repeats this phrase ’thy will be done’ in submission to this alien entity. She is essentially praying to the alien and equating it with God.

Once she utters this phrase, Pitterson says the former nun dropped the bloodied crucifix to the floor suggesting her faith has been defeated.

In his review of the film for Gospel Coalition, Brett McCracken noticed several Biblical references buried throughout the script.

In terms of its impact on religion, he writes:

Would the discovery of alien life really be faith-shattering? One character in Disclosure Day (a former novitiate nun played by Bono’s daughter Eve Hewson) argues, “People will see [aliens] as deities. They’ll stop believing in God.” Another nun character is less threatened by the idea: “Why would [God] make such a vast universe, yet save it only for us?”

But this is not the first time we have seen a UFO connection to the Roman Catholic Church.

In June 2023, the New York Post reported claims made by a former US intelligence official, David Grusch. According to Grusch, Italian Dictator Benito Mussolini allegedly found an alien spacecraft in 1933, which was reportedly stored at a top secret Italian airbase.

According to Grusch, the US government received the tip about this find from none other than the Vatican, more specifically Pope Pius XI.

But this story repeats the chronic problem that has plagued UFO enthusiasts for decades. There is no concrete evidence for any of these claims. Grusch added that everything associated with this find has been classified as top secret by the US government.

“Disclosure Day” coincides with the release of government documents on UFOs ordered by US President Donald Trump. So far nothing of significance has been released. We have seen similar videos and photos in the past.

What is repeatedly missing is an actual alien spacecraft or remains of aliens that would prove it to be true. Many insist that this evidence exists, but is being hidden away by governments at top secret locations.

As noted in previous articles, many Christians believe that some of these UFOs are simply spiritual beings, such as demons, manifesting in the physical realm.

Hugh Ross, who has a Ph.D. in astronomy, helped found Reasons to Believe. He believes when you hear of UFOs defying the laws of physics, you are now dealing with something supernatural, not natural.
