It will be interesting to see how this turns out. But according to KOMO News, Seattle city council is considering making poverty, drug/alcohol addiction and mental illness a legal defence in cases involving theft.

Essentially, they are making theft legal for those with those issues or claim to have these problems because in some instances they will not even require medical proof.

KOMO News writes:

SEATTLE — The Seattle City Council is considering new legislation that would create a legal loophole that would make substance addiction, mental illness or poverty a valid legal defense for nearly all misdemeanor crimes committed in the city.

The council’s consideration of the plan has occurred with virtually no public discussion about the proposal, which has been included in the municipal budgeting process. The council has not, so far, conducted a standalone meeting to discuss the idea.

Seattle’s former public safety advisor, Scott Lindsay said such legislation would create “a green light for crime.”

Everyone knows where this will go, because they can see what is happening in cities where police are being defunded.

One response to “Seattle to make theft legal?”

  1. Does it work with the tax man? (Sorry, couldn’t resist).
