In his newly released book, Ten Days in the Islāmic State, German journalist Jurgen Todenhofer, 75, reports on his disturbing 10-day encounter with ISIS terrorists.
Using Skype, Todenhofer was able to negotiate his visit that involved stays in two Islamic State controlled cities — Mosul, Iraq and Raqqa, Syria. He was babysat at times by none other than British terrorist Jihad John who gained his notoriety through beheading videos. Todenhofer added that those videos were purposefully done to intimidate and spread fear.
It is believed ISIS allowed Todenhofer to embed with the group because he opposed the US invasion of Iraq. The journalist didn’t really trust ISIS and admitted preparing a will before joining the group because they had previously beheaded journalists.
One of the most disturbing things that Todenhofer had to say is that ISIS’s goal is to use atomic weapons to create a “nuclear tsunami” that will result in the largest religious cleansing the world has ever seen.
He says the west is “drastically underestimating the power of ISIS.”
According to the journalist, ISIS now controls territory the size of England and hundreds of recruits from around the world are joining ISIS daily. What he found particularly disturbing was the excitement displayed by the terrorists for their cause.
He adds:
“They are the most brutal and dangerous enemy I have ever seen in my life.”
It is no secret ISIS is after nuclear weapons and with Iran seeking the same, there is potential for nuclear holocaust like the world has never seen.
Does the Bible speak of nuclear attacks?
Some wonder if the Bible addresses nuclear attacks in any of its end-times passages and prophecies. There are some verses that suggest it may, but it is also possible they are referring to something else. With that provision, here are a few of them:
Zechariah 14:12 speaks of God striking the enemies of Israel with a plague that will rot their flesh as they stand on their feet and as well their eyes and tongues. This verse gives the impression it will happen so quickly people will not even fall down. This could describe a nuclear blast.
12 Now this will be the plague with which the Lord will strike all the peoples who have gone to war against Jerusalem; their flesh will rot while they stand on their feet, and their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongue will rot in their mouth. (Zechariah 14:12 NASV)
But the prophet does use the word plague to describe the event and that may rule out a nuclear attack. However, it is also possible Zechariah used a word that people would understand.
If the prophet said you will be judged with an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile, such as the Russian made 15F1r with a 750 kilotons to 1.65 megaton warhead, would the people of that day have any idea what he was talking about? Who knows where these weapons will come from, but I use this as an example to illustrate that there were no Hebrew words in use during this time that could accurately describe a nuclear explosion.
Revelation 8:10-11 talks about a star named “wormwood” hitting the earth and poisoning waters so that anyone who drinks from them dies. This would certainly fit the description of nuclear weapon with a radiation fallout poisoning rivers. But the Apostle John uses the word star to describe it. But as I just mentioned, John possibly used a word the people understood. John may have also added the name wormwood to show this one was different from your normal star.
Isaiah 17:1-3 speaks of Syria’s desolation in the end times. Damascus will be utterly destroyed and it warns that several cities will be abandoned. Again in ancient times it was not uncommon for armies to completely destroy cities and for people to abandon towns. But what is unusual is how widespread it was. Since Damascus still exists today, the prophecy is referring to an event yet to come.
Jeremiah 49:8-9 warns the descendants of Esau/Edom, early ancestors of some of the people groups in the Middle East, to hide in “deep caves” during the end-times.” Though it was common for people to hide in caves during invasions, it is a bit unusual to suggest they hide in deep caves.
Turn and flee, hide in deep caves,
you who live in Dedan,
for I will bring disaster on Esau
at the time when I punish him. (Jeremiah 49:8 NIV)
Of course, during the cold war many underground bunkers were built because they were thought to be the best way to protect from a nuclear attack. The Cheyenne Mountain underground bunker in Colorado Springs, Colorado is a complex built 2000 feet underground and designed to withstand a blast of a 30 megaton nuclear bomb.
It holds the headquarters for NORAD and the United States Northern Command. It comes complete with its own power system and includes a cafeteria, store, medical facility and even a fitness centers.
