In a recent interview, Lisa Robertson, the wife of Alan Robertson of Duck Dynasty fame, spoke of her regret on having an abortion after an affair. She and her husband Alan were being interviewed by HuffPost Live TV.
Duck Dynasty is A&E’s popular reality show that features the Robertson clan who own Duck Commander, a duck-call manufacturer. The family members, who are all Christians, are very bold about their faith, even during the program. Alan is the oldest son of Phil and Kay Robertson who started Duck Commander.
Lisa and Alan had gotten together as young teenagers. They were separated for a time when Alan took off to New Orleans to find himself. While he was gone, Lisa turned to sex and drugs. She ended up in a relationship with an older man and became pregnant at age 16. She decided to have an abortion.
Meanwhile, in New Orleans Alan was turning his life around and when he returned the two reunited.
In the January 6th interview, Lisa stated she believed the abortion allowed her and Alan to get back together. Lisa added that she opposed abortion, but would not force her opinion on others.
It was a this point, interviewer Nancy Redd asked Lisa if she was pro-choice, and Lisa answered that she was.
“At the time it was the answer that I sought. As I sit here today, that’s not the answer I would have chosen had I known better, had I been more mature in my thinking. I would never say it was a good choice.”
However, she did add:
“I don’t feel like I should have had a choice to take that life. God is the only Person that has the choice to take a life, or to bring into the world a life.
There has not been—maybe a day has gone by that I have not thought of this child. We have two daughters, two grown daughters. I could have had three children, and I messed that up.”
Her statement that she was pro-choice created a storm of controversy among Christian supporters of the show. As well, the Robertson family strongly opposes abortion. Even during the interview, Alan interjected that he was pro-life and an abortion was never the right choice, no matter the circumstance.
Later in a Facebook posting, Lisa said she regretted her statement. She stated unequivocally she is against abortion and is pro-life. Lisa said she felt trapped into saying she was pro-choice. In her post, Lisa clarified:
“I am pro-choice only when it’s Gods choice. I was so flustered over her questions & just wasn’t aware that she was trying to trap me. Call me naive. I had an abortion @ 16 & I clearly stated that it was a decision that I’ve regretted all my life. I also stated that I thought God was the only person qualified to take a life because he made the life.”
