As cultural wars rage for the unborn, Mike and Jessica Tomy were awaiting the birth of their third child when they received some tragic news.
Jessica was in her second trimester when an ultrasound revealed that the baby’s size was not only four weeks behind, but Jessica also had very low levels of amniotic fluid which is a protective layer that surrounds a baby while in the womb.
The fluid not only cushions the baby, but also provides water, nutrients and biochemicals necessary to sustain life.
The doctor told the couple that their baby was not going to survive. And then dropped the bombshell, that when the baby’s heartbeat finally stopped, he would have to induce the birth of their dead child.
After hearing the tragic news, Jessica and Mike stopped work on the baby’s room and instead prepared for a funeral.
They asked family and friend to pray for them during this difficult time.
But there was one moment when everything changed. Jessica was reading an article how a woman had been miraculously healed from cancer after prayer.
Jessica said that suddenly a great peace came over her and she knew in that instant God was going to do something and asked the Lord for a miracle.
I believe in that moment, Jessica received a gift of faith, which is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit mentioned by the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 12:
7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, (1 Corinthians 12:7-9 ESV)
Though God wants us to believe for miracles and provision, there are times when our faith is sapped. It could be destroyed by the words that people say to us.
Whatever the case, our faith disappears, as fear and unbelief takes over our lives.
But God does not abandon us during these times, because the Holy Spirit can deposit a gift of faith into our hearts.
I received a gift of faith once, when the Holy Spirit deposited a small drop of faith into my heart, as I struggled to believe that we would sell our home.
For a brief moment, I believed it would sell and then just as quickly as it had showed up, it was gone, and I was again consumed by unbelief and doubt about our house ever selling.
But in that millisecond of faith, our home had been sold and despite my continuing unbelief, within a couple of weeks, it did sell in a series of unusual circumstances, that also challenged my faith.
And I believe this is what happened with Mike and Jessica. Though they continued praying for God to heal their baby, God TV reports that they admitted struggles with “doubt and fear” and they were terrified about the prospect of Jessica giving birth to a dead baby.
But Jessica asked her church friends to pray for their unborn child, specifically for the baby to grow and the important amniotic fluid to increase.
A couple weeks later, Jessica returned for a second ultrasound and received the incredible news that not only had the amniotic fluid increased, but the baby was now double in size.
The doctor admitted that he had no explanation for the strange miracle that had just taken place and a few months later, Samuel Tomy came into the world, slightly underweight, but healthy.
