The government of New South Wales (NSW), the home state of Australia’s capital city Sydney, has just offered its citizens a get out of jail free card.
The Blaze reports that the NSW government will now allow any person who gets fully vaccinated an extra hour out of their home.
Under its current Draconian lockdown, NSW has closed all unnecessary businesses and ordered people to stay-at-home. It has even instituted a curfew between 9 pm and 5 am and, at one point last year, had helicopters out with search lights looking for people breaking an earlier curfew.
People are allowed out of their homes for one hour each day to exercise and are also allowed to do essential activities such as grocery shopping and receiving medical attention. But that glorious one hour of freedom could be increased to two if they get vaccinated.
Many Australians are noting the irony that the country that originally started out as a penal colony, is now reverting back to one.
But the government is not done with its incentives. It is also hinting that if 70% of people are fully vaccinated, the government might, emphasis on might, allow people to even go out and get a hair cut by mid-October.
On a related note, New Zealand and a couple of states in Australia, including NSW, have instituted a zero-COVID policy. In other words, they will only end the lockdowns once there are zero cases of COVID. Many people believe such a goal is impossible, and governments are essentially stating that the lockdowns will never end.
Many epidemiologists are now suggesting that COVID, like the flu, is always going to be with us, and we need to learn how to live with it.
