The Daily Mail reports that Yeonmi Park made that statement while talking about her educational experience at Columbia University, one of America’s vaunted Ivy League schools.
When she was 13 years old, Yeonmi, along with her mother, fled North Korea into Communist China, where human traffickers captured them and sold them into slavery. However, with the help of Christian missionaries, they were able to flee across the Gobi Desert to South Korea and then to the US.
Yeonmi, 27, a popular YouTuber, is now attending Columbia, and described her experience at the school similar to what she experienced in North Korea.
In an interview with Fox News, Yeonmi said:
‘I literally crossed the Gobi Desert to be free and I realized I’m not free, America’s not free.
‘I expected that I was paying this fortune, all this time and energy to learn how to think. But they are forcing you to think the way they want you to think. I realized, ‘Wow, this is insane. I thought America was different but I saw so many similarities to what I saw in North Korea that I started worrying.’
I realized, ‘Wow, this is insane.’ I thought America was different but I saw so many similarities to what I saw in North Korea that I started worrying.
Like North Korea, she was told at Columbia that America is bad, and that she needed to hate America.
She added that professors were also telling her that all the problems in the world were due to ‘white’ men, while failing to mention people such as Mao Zedong, who slaughtered tens of millions of people in Communist China.
Yeonmi added that students are no longer being trained to think for themselves, but are being brainwashed.
She compared this to North Korea where many believe the country’s tyrant for life, Kim Jong-un, is starving like the rest of North Koreans.
She was shocked when someone showed her a photo of Jong-un:
‘And then somebody showed me a photo and said ‘Look at him, he’s the fattest guy. Other people are all thin.’ And I was like ‘Oh my God, why did I not notice that he was fat?’ Because I never learned how to think critically.’
She added that Columbia is stifling free speech, and she saw people at the school wanting to give away their rights and freedoms to the government.
At first, she tried to argue but quickly realize if she wanted to pass with good grades she needed to just shut up. Adding, “Even North Korea is not this nuts. North Korea was pretty crazy, but not this cray.”
And keeping with this vein, one employer just wrote an article for the Wall Street Journal explaining why he will no longer hire a graduate of an Ivy League school.
