Oh, the irony: Gospel/blues singer Lady A is being sued

The country group ‘Lady Antebellum’ decided to change its name to ‘Lady A’ because its original name had connections to slavery. But here is the irony, Anita White, a black Gospel and blues singer was already using that name ‘Lady A’, and had been using for nearly 20 years.

Now for the irony.

The Blaze explains how the group formerly known as ‘Lady Antebellum’ is treating a black woman because the group’s original name was formerly associated with the terrible treatment of black people:

The country group formerly known as Lady Antebellum changed their name to Lady A last month, apologizing for “the hurt” caused by their original band moniker due to its association with “the period of history before the Civil War, which includes slavery.”

But a black gospel and blues artist, Anita White—who has used the stage name Lady A for decades—protested over Lady Antebellum’s decision to hijack her brand. Now, the country group is suing White to be sure they can perform as Lady A without her claiming trademark infringement.

The optics are bad, but the band formerly known as ‘Lady Antebellum’ claims to own the trademark to ‘Lady A.’
