Denzel Washington, 62, is a popular American Actor, playing major roles in such movies as Remembering the Titans, Training Day and one of my favorites — The Book of Eli. He has won two Academy awards and three Golden Globes.

In an interview with Parade Magazine, Denzel spoke of his strong spiritual roots, including his father who was Pentecostal preacher for nearly five decades. Denzel added that he reads the Bible daily and has read it through completely three times.

God had a call and a purpose for Denzel and he tells of a prophetic word given him by an older woman at their church who many considered a prophet. She told Denzel that one day he would speak to millions of people.

Denzel was 21 years old and had just flunked out of college. He was sitting in his mother’s beauty shop, when the old woman approached him.

In an interview with Access Hollywood, Denzel recounts what happened next:

It was March 27, 1975. I started acting four months later. She said, “You know young man, you are going to travel the world and speak or preach to millions of people…

She said that, and then she wrote “prophecy.” She couldn’t even spell it well. Then my mother wrote “preacher.” And then I wrote my name—and it was on a blue envelope; I still have it.

So when she left, I said to my mother, “Who was that lady?” She said, “Well, she’s one of the oldest church members in town, and she’s known to have the gift of prophecy.”

This was supposed to be my life. She actually called it before… It’s nothing I did. It’s by the grace of God.

I wrote a story last year about a similar prophetic word given to actor Chris Pratt. In an interview with Esquire Magazine, under-aged, he was standing outside a Hawaii liquor store waiting for his friends who were in buying booze, when a stranger approached him.

The man told Chris:

“I stopped because Jesus told me to stop and talk to you. He said to tell you you’re destined for great things.”

When his friends came out a few minutes later, Pratt told them he would not be joining them that night and instead went with this man, who was a member of a Christian organization — Jews for Jesus.

Pratt said:

“I gave my soul to Jesus within, like, two days. I was stuffing envelopes for his organization, Jews for Jesus. I’m not even sure, at that age—I was nineteen years old—I knew what Jewish was.”

Four weeks after Chris became a Christian, he was waiting tables at the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. in Maui, when a Hollywood movie director came into the restaurant. Within a few weeks, Chris was in California working his first movie.

In both the Old and New Testament, God spoke to people through the prophets. According to the Encyclopedia of Biblical prophecies, there are 578 prophecies found in the New Testament and 1,239 in the Old Testament. In total they covered 8,352 verses.

Prophecy is a big part of the Bible and God used prophetic words to show people their future much in the same way the Holy Spirit did for Denzel and Chris.

King David is today considered one of Israel’s greatest kings. But before his rise to fame, David was working in obscurity as a shepherd for his father. This was the equivalent of a college drop out or working as a waiter in a restaurant.

Then one day out of nowhere, the prophet Samuel shows up at Bethlehem and prophesies that David would be the next king of Israel (1 Samuel 16:1-13).

God used prophecy in the Bible and still uses it today to encourage people in their walk with God. I am convinced that we will need this gift more than ever to survive the coming tumultuous times.

14 Pursue love, yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. (1 Corinthians 14:1 NASV)
