And God said, “Let there be an invisible electron blocking shield around earth and there was…”

[by Dean Smith] Scientists say they are baffled and can’t explain it, but they have discovered an invisible shield surrounding the earth. Located in the Van Allen belt, found 11,200 km (7,200 miles) above the earth, the shield protects our planet from bombardment by electrons. These electrons which travel at near light speed are  extremely dangerous. If they hit earth in enough volume, they would, among other things, cause a dramatic increase in cancer rates, affect electronics of all kinds — even frying satellites and as well profoundly impact the earth’s weather. The Daily Mail refers to them as “killer electrons” that even endanger astronauts. The Van Allen Belt, discovered in 1958, is composed of two massive circular rings with an inner and outer belt extending 25,000 kms (11,000 miles) into space. They are basically “two swaths of radiation” held in place by the earth’s gravity. The belts swell in size with increased solar activity. In 2012, scientists sent a space craft into the Van Allen belt to research it. What they discovered shocked them. …

Does the “Sandwich theory” help us understand a puzzling Bible story?

[by Dean Smith] In Matthew 21:18-22, we have the strange story of the fig tree. Jesus who was hungry saw a lone fig tree by the road and went to it looking for figs. When He found no figs, Jesus cursed the tree and it withered and died. The disciples were shocked by what happened and Jesus gave them a brief teaching on faith and they continued their journey into Jerusalem. However, what makes the story a bit odd is that it was not the season for the fig tree to produce fruit — which Mark notes (Mark 11:13). Jesus and the disciples knew this and in this odd statement we realize one thing — the story is not about the fig tree.

Rethinking the “desires of your heart”

Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart. (Psalm 37:4 NASV) Many have used this verse believing if we seek after God, He will give us everything we desire — a big home, a great job, a new car…. the list is endless. But is this how we should interpret this verse? As we struggle with sin, we know in our mind it is wrong and we realize we need to stop.  But the biggest part of our struggle is that we still want this sin. We still desire the pleasure it brings or the rush it gives us. Some even miss it, when they try to stop.  So it is a battle between what our mind knows and what our heart wants. Maybe God wants to change your desires so you no longer want the porn or the new pair of shoes or the drugs or whatever bondage enslaves you. Instead of praying for the big house, ask God to give you the actual “desires of your …

So You Hate Your Job, Chapter Three: Lose the attitude

[by Sandy McIntosh] In your job, or career, or business, are you proud of your success? Are you stressed about not getting what you deserve? Is recognition too slow sometimes? I once worked in a prestigious place where winners had window offices, and losers had cubicles. When I learned that a former Director’s office was vacant, I did my best lobbying and I got it, with my Director’s old desk. He was upgrading too. So I had a large window office with a big wooden desk; and no I did not have emotional problems with that. It felt good. Soon after, Stan came by my new office. He seemed impressed and asked “How did you get an office like this? You’re doing pretty good for a …” Stan didn’t finish his sentence, and I never learned my rank in the local religion.

Alien attacks, War of the Worlds, Martians and evolution

[by Dean Smith] Atheists and evolutionists like to discredit Christians for our belief in God who created the heavens and earth. They in turn insist their beliefs are all about the science. But that is often not the case. In fact, a recent poll showed that over half of atheists believe in life on other planets without any credible evidence for their existence. Atheists do have faith — it is just in Aliens. At the annual meeting of the American Physical Society in Illinois held Saturday, November 22, 2014. Physicist Dr. John Brandenburg presented his scientific evidence that there was an ancient civilization living on Mars that was completely destroyed when another Alien race attacked the planet.

Ship of Fools

[by Earl Blacklock] Henry Ford was an extraordinary man. Founder of the Ford Motor Company, he developed the assembly line which completely transformed manufacturing. An inventor, he held 161 U.S. patents, and his Model T made road transportation affordable to the working class. He spoke to princes and presidents, and counted Thomas Edison as his friend. Henry Ford was also an anti-semite, publishing and supporting outrageous claims of a Jewish world-wide conspiracy. And he was a fool. Nowhere was this more evident than his underwriting of a Peace Ship to transport pacifists to Europe in December of 1915. His intent was to try to stop World War I by arousing public opinion.

The Closer You Get The Bigger It Is

[by Wayne Johnston] While standing on top of Castle Butte in the Badlands of southern Saskatchewan with a few friends, we noticed a small group of boulders in the middle of the next valley. We set off to explore them, and after a long walk, we were surprised to find a large group of massive odd-shaped boulders. Our small group all seemed to feel the same – “these rocks sure didn’t look that big from the top of that 200-foot butte”. The closer you get, the bigger it is! Sometimes it’s like that with God – the closer I get to Him, the bigger He is. Theologically I know God is spirit and that He is all powerful and all present. The problem is not with God, however, it’s our perception of Him.

An Investment Well Made

[by Earl Blacklock] A.J. Cronin was a physician and one of England’s most successful novelists. His most famous work is the 1937 book The Citadel, which provides an insider’s view of the problems found in the hidebound British medical profession. Cronin regularly crossed the Atlantic by ocean liner. On one such voyage he began to notice a fellow passenger gazing at him intently. It was clear the man wanted to approach him, but he seemed too shy to do so.

Prayer results in two miracles at Florida’s Boca Raton hospital

[by Dean Smith] When Ruby Graupera-Cassimiro, 40, entered Boca Baton Regional hospital in Boca Raton, Florida, for a typical C-section she was not expecting a few hours later that her name would be broadcast across the country because of a miracle. According to a report in the Sun Sentinel, after her baby’s safe delivery, Ruby stopped breathing and then a short time later her heart stopped beating. A medical team, numbering over 12, frantically worked to revive her. Team members alternated doing CPR as they tired, others applied shock treatments to restart Ruby’s heart. But after 45 minutes doctors realized there was nothing more they could do. Ruby had died.

The blank column

[by Earl Blacklock] Tex Wilson was a newspaper editor in the U.S. midwest, 40 years in the business. At 65, he purchased a local newspaper as his retirement project. He was editor, photographer, and reporter together. Whether there was celebration or sorrow in the town, Tex was there to record the event. Over the years, the community learned to appreciate Tex and his newspaper. There was one thing, though, that gave them pause. On occasion, the paper would be printed with a column or two totally blank. It seemed at first an oversight, like someone forgot to lay the page out properly. But it happened often enough that speculation as to its meaning began.
