PODCAST NOTES:

While atheists mock Christians because of our belief in God, a 2021 Pew survey found that 85% of atheists/agnostics believed in little green men and aliens. But they weren’t alone. The same survey revealed that 80% of nones, those with no religious affiliation, also believed in aliens.

Though certainly not as high, overall 57% of Christians also believed in alien life. But this involved a very broad definition of Christian. More specifically only 40% of Evangelicals believed in aliens and UFOs.

And if a survey conducted over 11 years ago by Astronomer David Weintraub is any indication, atheists’ belief in aliens has surged in recent years. In his book, Religions and Extraterrestrial life, published in 2014, the Vanderbilt University professor found only 55% of atheists believed in aliens at that time. This represents a 50% increase in just 11 years..

But to be fair, Evangelical Christians also saw an increase rising from 32% to 40% today.

The growing belief is probably due to the recent uptake in media stories on UFOs and of course social media.

This included the release of a report on UFO sightings in June 2021, by the US military.  On top of this, you have YouTube videos of people testifying they were captured by aliens for experimentation.

While we saw the release of Sci-fi movies like Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015 and Star Trek Beyond in 2016, no-one has ever gotten their hands on an actual UFO.

Of course, conspiracy theorists claim the US government has some secretly stashed away at Area 51 in the US state of Nevada. And if the mega movie hit, Independence Day, is to be believed, there are even live aliens at the site.

But the lack of concrete evidence doesn’t stop atheists from believing.

Stephen Hawkins, one of the world’s most famous atheist before he died in 2018, was vocal about his belief in alien life and his disbelief in God.

In a documentary produced for the Discovery Channel, the outspoken physicist said:

“If aliens visit us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn’t turn out well for the Native Americans.”

But to be fair, not all physicists hold Hawkins’ opinion.

In a mini-documentary series produced in 2014 for the BBC, entitled Human Universe, famed UK physicist, Professor Brian Cox stated that he doesn’t believe in alien life because what happened on earth was so miraculous, it would be impossible to repeat.

Cox explains:

“There is only one advance technological civilization in this galaxy and there has only ever been one– and that’s us. We are unique.“

The Bible holds a different opinion, and starts with these words:

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. (Genesis 1:1 NIV)
