According to an article on Israel365 News, a practice ceremony was recently conducted in Israel for the red heifer sacrifice. This included the actual burning of a red heifer.

Israel National News, which first reported the practice sacrifice, revealed that a red heifer was burned on a wood pyre at an undisclosed location in Samaria. It was conducted according to rabbinical tradition (the Talmud).

In 2022, the Temple Institute purchased five American red heifers and brought them to Israel. The five animals were examined with a magnifying glass to ensure they had no off-colored hairs and qualified for the sacrifice.

Since their arrival, three of the heifers have developed discolored hairs making them ineligible.

The ashes from a red heifer are mixed with water and sprinkled on the priests purifying them for temple work (Numbers 19:1-10).

Priests are made impure by coming in contact with a dead body, or someone who had touched a dead body. It can also happen by visiting a graveyard or even a hospital or coming in contact with someone who has.

Since this can happen unknowingly, priests must go through this purification process before fulfilling their priestly duties. This means the red heifer sacrifice is necessary to run the temple, if it is ever constructed.

The ashes from the red heifer sacrifice can be stored and one sacrifice can purify thousands of priests. According to Jewish tradition, only nine red heifers have been sacrificed since the start of the Jewish priesthood.

There has not been a red heifer sacrifice since the temple was destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD

Though, this practice run involved the actual burning of a red heifer, a practice run was also conducted in 2024. They only used a cut out of red bull (not a heifer), as they rehearsed the sacrifice ritual.

Since the ritual was instituted, rabbis have added several rules not mentioned in the Biblical text.

For example, the Bible says the red heifer sacrifice must be conducted at a location outside the camp. But Rabbinical tradition states it must take place at a specific location on Jerusalem’s Mount of Olives. This would require government permission to conduct the sacrifice.

Other Talmudic rules regulating the sacrifice that are not mentioned in the Bible include:

• The type of rope used to halter the animal,
• The type of sandals the priests must wear,
• The direction the animal is facing when it’s sacrificed, and
• The words the priests utter during the ceremony.

The Temple Institute wants to construct a third Jewish Temple in Jerusalem, requiring a red heifer sacrifice. Its construction is presently being hindered by Muslims who control the Temple Mount.

Many believe that a third Jewish Temple is necessary for the fulfilment of end times prophecy (see 2 Thessalonians 2:4 and Revelation 11:1-2).

Since the church is now the temple of God (1 Corinthians 3:16), these passages may be referring to a spiritual temple, not a physical one.
