The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) has issued a warning to the 300,000 residents of Anchorage, Alaska. An eruption is imminent on Mount Spurr, a 11,000 foot volcano, located just 81 miles away. Residents were urged to buy N9-5 masks and stock up on food, water and medicine, the Daily Mail reports.
This is due to increased earthquake activity at Mount Spurr which has risen from 3o per week last fall to 125. This includes a 3.7 magnitude earthquake that hit on April 2, 2025. There has also been an increase in gas emissions from a side event, Crater Peak, since March 7, 2025.
These are all indicators that lava is building up beneath the volcano.
If it does erupt, AVO predicts that the volcanic plume would go as high as 50,000 feet.
Mount Spurr’s main volcanic cauldron has not erupted for a few thousand years, but Crater Peak erupted in 1992. The eruption released so much ash that it darkened the mid afternoon sun over Anchorage. It also covered the city with a small layer of ash. Though no one was killed, people had heart attacks shoveling ash, from which one person die..
The warning of a 50,000 foot plume and darkening of the sun fits the prophet Joel’s description of events occurring before the “great and awesome day of the Lord,” a reference to Christ’s second coming.
In his prophecy, Joel warns:
“And I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. 31 The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, (Joel 2:30-31a)
Columns of smoke are the iconic sign of volcanic activity. Along with this Joel adds that the sun will be darkened because of the smoke.
But Joel’s prophecy adds two things of note. First the word columns is in the plural. This means there will be several volcanic eruptions in the lead up to Christ’s return.
Secondly, Joel saw that “blood and fire” will be linked with these eruptions. Blood of course suggests people with be injured and even killed and fire suggests destruction.
While all eyes are on Mount Spurr, this is not the only American volcano on scientists’ radar. Watch warnings have been issued in 2025 for two other volcanoes, the Daily Mail reports,
Besides Alaska’s Mount Spurr, the state’s Great Sitkin volcano is showing increased activity. According to AVO, satellite images reveal that lava is filling its crater and lava flows are starting to move down its side.
But it’s not just Alaska where concerns are being raised. Hawaii’s Kīlauea volcano shield, located on Hawaii Island, has been spewing lava into the sky since December 2024. The most recent of 17 eruptions took place on Monday, April 7, 2025. Some of the past explosions have reached 1,000 feet (305 meters).
Of course, most of us remember the images from Kilauea’s 2018 eruption. It resulted in the destruction of over 700 homes and lava flows that covered 32 square miles.
The massive Caldera beneath Yellowstone Park is not on the watch list. Still, activity has been picking up since March 15, 2025. Science Sensei reports that “multiple universities have converged on the area to supplement USGS monitoring efforts.” Though no restrictions are in place, park officials are receiving extra training. If it ever erupted, the massive Yellowstone Caldera would impact most of the American Midwest.
