In a bit of a shocker, Daddy Yankee, a megastar Puerto Rican singer, announced during his farewell concert over the past weekend that he has become a Christian, Premier Christian News reports.
Daddy Yankee, who is known for such hits as “Despacito” and “Gasolina”, told his Puerto Rican audience that his newfound faith in Christ is behind his decision to retire.
“All the tools that I have in my possession—like music, social networks, platforms, a microphone, everything that Jesus gave me—is now for the Kingdom,” he told those attending his farewell concert in San Juan.
“I am not ashamed to tell the whole world that Jesus lives in me and that I will live for him,” he said.
He went on to explain that despite all his success, there had been a void in his life that could only be filled by Christ.
“For a long time, I tried to fill a void in my life that no one could fill,” Daddy Yankee said. “Sometimes I appeared to be very happy, but something was missing to make me complete, and I have to confess that those days are over.
“Someone was able to fill that void that I felt for a long time. I was able to realize that for everyone I was someone, but I was nothing without Him,” he added.
“Now anyone who knows me as Daddy Yankee should say, ‘Daddy Yankee in Christ, Raymond Ayala in Puerto Rico.’ A story is over, and a new story is going to begin a new beginning,” he continued.
As he exited the stage, he told the audience, “Christ loves you, and Christ is coming.”
During his career, Daddy Yankee has won several awards including five Latin Grammy Awards, 14 Billboard Latin American Music Awards, and two Billboard Music awards. His videos on YouTube have been viewed billions of times.
He has also set 10 Guinness World Records, including being the first Latin American artist to reach the top spot on Spotify’s global chart. In 2009, CNN nominated him as their choice for the “Most Influential Hispanic Artist.”
