Some are suggesting there are hints that sanity may be returning to the Pakistani judicial system after a Christian couple recently accused of blasphemy was granted bail by a judge citing insufficient evidence for the charge, the Christian Post reports.
The couple, Kiran Bibi and Shaukat, were released on Oct. 18, after being accused of damaging or defiling a Koran. If found guilty, the couple were subject to life imprisonment.
The couple were charged after Muhammad Tamoor stated that he saw pages of the Koran flying out of a window in the couple’s home.
The court ruled that there was not only a lack of evidence this had happened, but also questioned the accuser’s motivation for making the claim.
Over the years, Muslims have routinely used the country’s blasphemy laws to attack Christians and other religious minorities to settle legal disputes and arguments.
The judge’s decision was referred to as a ‘landmark judgment’ by those seeking changes to the country’s barbaric blasphemy legislation.
