Archaeologists working at the site of the Hyrcania Fortress in Israel’s Judean desert have uncovered what has been described as a very rare paraphrase of a Hebrew Psalm, with a Christian twist, the Christian Post reports.

According to the archaeologists working with the Hebrew University, the paraphrased inscription from Psalm 86 was written in red ink on a large stone that was once part of a hall at the site.

The inscription read, “Jesus Christ, guard me, for I am poor and needy” and was based on the first two verses from Psalm 86 where King David writes,

Hear me, Lord, and answer me,
    for I am poor and needy.
Guard my life, for I am faithful to you;
    save your servant who trusts in you.
You are my God;
(Psalm 86:1-2 NIV)

The stone was dated to the first or second century.

According to Bar-Ilan University’s Dr. Avner Ecker, this psalm known as the ‘prayer of David’ was one of the most popular psalms cited by early Christians.

The quotation, which also had a cross painted at the top, was probably written by an ancient monk. It is believed to be the first time that an inscription from any of the Psalms has been discovered etched on the walls of a building.
