Have you heard about AI, or maybe the specific app “Chat GPT?” The rumor is that students are using this technology to write term papers for their professors. It’s an interesting idea, but I have no proof.
Another idea is to make religions into something new, with less controversy, using AI to rewrite religious books. Holy scriptures could become politically correct alterations; for all major religions.
I am writing as a Christian. So, could the Bible be altered by a computer program, to support some agenda?
Yes.
And before I continue, I have to tell you something:
- [X] I am not a robot.
How do you know that I am writing this, and by “I” I mean an actual human being and not a computer program? We all need to know this, or we will soon.
Is the news that we follow real news, or is it generated by a computer that belongs to some large corporation? How do you know that an article like this, is written by a real person?
I know someone who made a career as a radio announcer and eventually became the manager of several radio stations in a small city. He was doing well, and then he was fired. He knew that was coming because first, he had to fire most of his staff.
I asked him what happened, and he told me that the “local” stations are now generated with computers in a big city somewhere. Announcers are more like technicians and reality on the air is not so real now.
If you are wondering, he found a good job as a communications director for a large organization, and I hope that he and his family are doing well.
Years ago, I worked as an English Language instructor at a large University. Students didn’t have AI to write their assignments, back then, but they did have spelling and grammar checkers.
We knew that the assignments that we corrected and graded were not purely the students’ work. I won’t give away secrets, but we had creative ways to teach and correct. We wanted actual students to learn.
Now back to me. Notice the line above, just above the word “robot.” I started a sentence with the word “And.” My grammar is incorrect, and I know it. I like to write those “and” sentences sometimes. Don’t judge me too harshly.
Also, in the second sentence, I used the American spelling for “rumor” when I could have used the British spelling “rumour.” At least you know that I am not a British robot.
And robots don’t make bad jokes. So, what is the best time to go to the dentist? Tooth-hurty in the afternoon.
An AI program would never do that. Robots are programmed to be perfect, and humans make mistakes. So yes, this is me, sitting on a chair, in our living room, with my old laptop, writing things I probably shouldn’t.
I am an embarrassment to all the robots out there, but I am real.
And then we have the AI Bible. [another “And” sentence] Imagine the power of rewriting religious texts with computer programs. We could make all those religions politically correct, including Christianity, Islam, and Judaism.
Imagine the power to correct believers, and make them conform more to some political agenda. There are rumors of Bible rewriting projects in modern times, including in China, and with some LGBTQ activists. If you are interested, do a search with “AI” and “Bible.”
Apparently, some people can imagine this power to distort, and our holy truth could be rewritten. How can we be sure that future generations will learn things that we believe are true? Some people are concerned about this threat:
We are warned, in the real Bible, that great deceptions will come on the whole world, at the end of our time in history:
The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false. (2 Thessalonians 2: 9 to 11)
I can’t be sure that our AI generated “truth” is what the Bible described, but we know that we have the potential to lie to ourselves, like never before. Notice that God will send a delusion to the human race. We will get what we want, and we will live with the results of our own decisions.
That is a promise in the real Bible, and it is now possible.
So, who are you? What is the truth that directs your life? If some AI robot rewrote the script, would you notice? How secure is your foundation?
Through your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. I have sworn an oath and confirmed it, to keep your righteous rules. (Psalm 119: 104 to 106)
