In a 6-3 decision, the US Supreme Court upheld religious freedom and ruled that a Colorado graphic designer can ‘not’ be forced to make a wedding website for a same-sex couple.
The case involved Christian artist, Lorie Smith, who sued the state of Colorado which had passed a law, the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act, that prevented businesses from refusing to provide services to people because of their sexual orientation.
It pitted Smith’s First Amendment Rights against LGBTQ rights to non-discrimination.
In this case, Smith stated that she had no problems working with same-sex people, but she said forcing her to create a same-sex wedding website violated her conscience and religious freedom.
“I think it’s important for people to understand that I love and welcome the opportunity to work with all people. My case has never been about choosing which client to work with, but about choosing the message that I’m being asked to promote,” Smith said in an interview with Fox News in March 2022.
The ruling states that the Colorado government can’t force Smith to support and promote same-sex marriage.
