The Lying Truth

I am so sick of the news lately. And I am a news junkie. The problem is that all the news outlets cover all the same stories with all the same angles. Here is a summary of every mainstream newscasts. Covid19 will get you. Trump is bad. Terrorists are peaceful protestors. Oh, and my favorite news item. A celebrity who knows nothing about what is happening released a statement saying the Covid19 and Trump are bad and here is a million bucks to help the protestors who are victimized by the police.

And then there is good old Canadian Pamela Anderson. Her news item was about if she would pose nude one more time for Playboy. This according to Fox News Entertainment Section. Thank you, Pam!

In case you’re wondering, she said no.

Now this is about as newsworthy as the woman who was offended by the man who held the door open for her. But it is a bit of relief in a news world gone mad with intent to scare and divide. The news used to be objective or at least pretend to be objective. CNN is the worst with its bias coverage of current affairs. Fox, now owned by Disney is almost as bad on the other side of the political spectrum.  CBC, BBC, ABC, and many other outlets have literally lost their minds trying to convince the masses how to think, believe, and act.

Alternative outlets seem a bit more objective but they too have an agenda.  After all they usually don’t operate on the profit motive so in a sense they can’t be bought. Follow the money trail of CNN for example and you will find out why they are so anti-Trump. In another sense, they alternative media have already been bought, not by money but by ideology. Epoch Times and CBN are two of my favorite because they reflect some of my Christian worldview. Alternative media seems to be more open about reporting from a particular angle than the mainstream media so in that sense, they are at least more honest.

All this is very frustrating. Out of this frustration has arisen a new phenomenon. The citizen reporter. These are people with a cell phone who see things that they record and put on YouTube or other social media. Some of them are pretty interesting and their commentary is just as valid as anything Anderson Cooper might say.

And all this can cause information overload. Lots of information but little wisdom and little truth.

Where do I find truth? Before I answer that let me first say what I and others in search of what is truly happening in the world. I read CNN (this one is tough), Fox, CBC, and a smattering of other smaller outlets to give me a balanced perspective. By weighing many sources, I can usually get a picture of what is really going on.

Is it true though?

There is only one source for the truth. Jesus is the truth. Jesus is the Word. Therefore, the truth is the Word which is found in the Bible. Some of this truth is really nice. God lives you is true and it is nice to hear. Some of this truth is not so nice to hear. The Bible is clear what sin is and the consequences of sin. It tells us that there is only one path into heaven and that is by submitting to Jesus. In a culture that does not like to be told anything they do is wrong and also does not like to submit these are tough to hear and even tougher to believe.

Christians are often painted in the media as bad. Closed minded, bigoted, hateful people who refuse to accept the ‘truths’ of modern life. Is this a true picture?

There are some who hide behind Christ as they hurt others, claiming it is Biblical to do so. The truth is God is love. The truth there is sin and it leads to death. The truth is Christians are called to spread the gospel and the truth is we are called to worship God in spirit and truth.

We do this by loving people but not loving the sin that has them trapped in a death grip that will hurt them for all eternity.

If you are as sick and tired of al the negative and biased news, try the good news. As Mulder said in the X-Files, “The truth is out there.”
