Though theoretical Physicist Freeman Dyson is a strong supporter of Barack Obama, he disagrees with the U.S. President in one fundamental area — Dyson does not believe in man-made global warming. Dyson stated this while Obama is on the campaign trail pushing governments to approve a global warming treaty at this year’s climate conference to be held in Paris November 30 – December 11, 2015.
Dyson used to believe in man-made Global warming and was one of the first scientists to begin studying it 25 years ago when he worked for Oak Ridge National Laboratory. But after years of research he no longer does.
Dyson is a prolific author writing several books and scientific papers on a variety of issues. He has also received many awards for his work.
He just did an interview with The Register after writing a foreword for a recently published scientific paper. In the interview he states that while he is 100% behind Obama, the Republicans are 100% right to question man-made global warming.
The paper that Dyson wrote the foreword for is also worth noting. It was written by Indur Goklany who was the co-founder of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change which is the leading force behind the UN’s push for a man-made Global Warming treaty.
Goklany has also changed his mind. In his paper entitled Carbon Dioxide the Good News he challenges the prevailing view that CO2 is evil. He wrote the paper for the Global Warming Policy Foundation, a think tank that explores the dissenting side of the man-made global warming debate.
Dyson says the science today is agenda driven and not scientifically based. In his interview with The Register, Dyson made an interesting observation:
“That to me is the central mystery of climate science. It is not a scientific mystery but a human mystery. How does it happen that a whole generation of scientific experts is blind to obvious facts?“
The Apostle Paul used the same word — ‘blind’ — to describe mankind’s resistance to the gospel.
4 in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. (2 Corinthians 4:4 NASV)
If satan can blind people’s minds to the Gospel, is he able to blind people’s minds to other things if it serves his purpose?
The reason Dyson disagrees with the man-made global warming hysteria is because it is driven by models and not by science. Dyson says categorically in both the interview and the foreword he wrote that the models are wrong.
They have been used to predict certain events and that these predictions are failing miserably to come to pass.
“What happened in the past ten years is that the discrepancies between what’s observed and what’s predicted have become much stronger. It’s clear now the models are wrong, but it wasn’t so clear 10 years ago.”
He specifically pointed out the earth has not warmed in the last 17 years despite record amounts of CO2 being poured into the atmosphere each year.
As I noted in a previous article, the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has been tracking CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere since 1974. Earlier this year, it sent out a news release stating the month of March had the highest level of CO2 concentrations of any month since NOAA started tracking CO2 levels.
Yet despite these higher concentrations, the ice in both the Arctic and Antarctic is returning. Scientists studying the antarctic ice with underwater drones were shocked to discover the ice was over twice as thick as their global warming models predicted.
When The Register asked Dyson why scientists are slow in getting off the man-made global warming band wagon, despite evidence showing it has little effect, he cited a couple of reasons.
First he said there is a lot money being flung around in support of Global warming. Dyson said, “there is a “large community of people who make their money by scaring the public.”
As the Apostle Paul wryly noted in his letter to Timothy — “the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil” (1 Timothy 6:10 NASV).
He also added that there is a group think taking place where those who hold a position contrary to the popular opinion are ridiculed.
“The old culture of group loyalty and dogmatic belief is still alive under the surface, guiding the thoughts of scientists as well as the opinions of ordinary citizens.”
One of the results of this peer pressure is that dissenting scientists will keep their mouths shut rather than running the wrath of those sitting firmly on the band wagon.
“I am hoping that the scientists and politicians who have been blindly demonizing carbon dioxide for 37 years will one day open their eyes and look at the evidence.”
Christopher Booker wrote in The Telegraph about a meeting of International Judges at a three-day conference at England’s Supreme Court in early October. Entitled,“Climate Change and the Law,” one of the items discussed was a proposal involving a test case that would make it illegal for anyone to offer dissenting opinions on man-made Global warming.
We are entering perilous times.
