The ‘Bizarro World’ of schools, kids, and facemasks

For those too young to know, the Bizarro World was the alternate Superman universe where everything was opposite. Good was evil and evil good. All thinking was reversed. The illogical became logical and logical became illogical. And, it seems, some of America’s public schools have now entered this alternate universe. The Daily Mail reports that on April 18, 2022, Milwaukee Public Schools ended their mask mandate. Students and teachers would no longer need to wear them. Mask wearing would be optional. Then, after one day of being free, the school board reversed the decision and required everyone to wear masks. Why, you ask? This is because COVID testing revealed over the course of one day there was a dramatic increase in COVID cases. The Daily Mail explains: There were 479 new cases of COVID-19 in Wisconsin on Tuesday – but the next day, that number shot up to 1,585, according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.  It’s ‘Bizarro World’ where illogical becomes logical. It typically takes around four days to test positive for COVID …

Study: High social media usage may cause mental health issues for teens?

According to a study conducted by Cambridge University’s Digital Mental Health program, social media may be causing mental issues in teens, particularly as they enter puberty. The study, reported by The Verge, noted that it came to this conclusion from studying the results of seven surveys of 72,000 individuals between 2011 and 2018 and a survey of 17,000 between the ages of 10 to 21. The study found that higher social media usage resulted in teens having ‘low’ self-esteem and ‘poor’ body image, which showed up when they entered puberty, and also at the time they were ready to leave home. The Verge reports: “Narrowing in on adolescents, the team found that for people in the 16- to 21-year-old age range, both very low and very high social media use were both linked with lower life satisfaction. In 10- to 15-year-olds, there wasn’tmuch difference in life satisfaction between kids reporting low and high social media use. But in that group, girls with high social media use had lower life satisfaction than boys.” READ: Social media …

The greatest earthquake in human history

Researchers at the University of Southampton in Britain say they have found evidence of the largest earthquake in human history that rocked Northern Chile around 1800 BC. They said the quake was over 9.5 on the Richter scale, resulting in a tsunamis that reached New Zealand, 8,047 km (5,000 miles) away. Earthquakes are caused by the rupturing of shifting tectonic plates, and the intensity of the earthquake is determined by the length of the rupture. At one thousand kilometers in length, the researchers stated that the rupture associated with this ancient Chilean earthquake is the longest ever found. The tsunami caused by the earthquake resulted in story-high boulders being pushed hundreds of meters inland. They believe it was larger than the massive earthquake that hit Chile on May 22, 1960, that registered 9.5 on the Richter scale, the largest recorded by instruments. It is estimated the 1960 quake and resulting tsunamis killed between 490 and 5700 people, with a significant majority dying from tsunamis that hit Hawaii, killing 61, and the Philippines, killing 21.
