If I said two words—‘cave man’ you would probably have a mental picture of a large person holding a club and wearing some simple clothes made from animal skins and fur. In popular fiction, those people were supposed to be our ancestors, and in the story, they descended from apes or monkeys who climbed down from trees and started walking on the ground. With their less developed brains, they supposedly spoke in grunts, and ate animals that they killed. Over millions of years, their descendants evolved larger brains and became more human, and eventually became us.

If that process continues, who knows what our descendants will become.

That is a quick summary of some ideas that we have learned from Darwin’s “Theory of Evolution.” Now we are taught about Evolution, but the word ‘Theory’ has been dropped. We are told by science educators that Darwin’s model is a fact, not a theory.

If you research the topic, you will probably find a reference to Charles Darwin’s profession. He is commonly described as a “Naturalist.”  

There are at least two problems with that title: 1) That profession did not exist in Darwin’s time, in the early eighteen hundreds in Victorian England. 2) Charles Darwin was educated at Cambridge University, in England, and he was trained to be a minister with the Church of England. It might be more accurate to describe Charles Darwin as a Theologian. At least, that is what he was trained to be at university.

Theology is the study of topics about God. “Theos” is a Greek word for “God” and is related to Latin ‘Deus’ and Spanish ‘Dios. In the case of Charles Darwin, Evolution fits well with atheism — the concept that there is no God (‘A-Theos’ in Greek).

I am writing as a Christian and I believe that there is a God, but I also have some education in universities. I learned early to stay away from arguments against Evolution — the idea that natural forces, starting with the appearance of living cells, eventually produced monkeys or apes that climbed down from trees and evolved into us over millions or even billions of years.

I was concerned that arguments could have given me bad marks from professors, and I wanted to pass my courses. I might have been wrong, but that was my decision, when I was younger.

There is one word to describe all of this, on both sides of the argument; “faith.” Both sides have faith: believers in creation by God, and the no-God people who believe there is evidence for evolution in a universe with no creator. On the no-God side, there is a belief in evidence found in fossils dug from the ground.

For those who believe in God, we have these words, in the Bible:

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible. (Hebrews 11: 1 to 3)

That is clear.

And now, we have new evidence. There is a growing conviction among secular scientists that the evidence they have trusted to support a no-God origin for humanity is eroding. If the evidence fails, the conviction must return to being an unproven theory, and a theory can only be believed by faith.

While we are deciding where to put our faith, we should know that we have something more to believe. We have a place to put our faith, for another creation.

The new creation is in the future:

Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

He said to me: “It is done. (Revelation 21: 1 to 6)

The emerging reality is, we must decide what to believe, where to put our faith.

This is an important lesson, in our modern world.
