Since the assassination of Charlie Kirk, I have been surprised by the number of people stating they are going to church. Aside from weddings and funerals, this is the first time for many of them.

Someone forwarded me an X post, of a person I worked with several years back. Candice announcing that she and her four children were going to church ‘for the first time in too long.”

Now a podcaster, she added that “Charlie Kirk makes me want to be a better Christian, and reaffirm my desire to raise my children with God.”

The person who forwarded the post added, “My entire timeline on X is of people going to church because of Charlie.”

Another prominent conservative podcaster, Jeremy Hambly (@thequartering), with a couple of million of followers on YouTube and Rumble, also announced he was going to church. I have watched him for years, and he had not shown any interest in spiritual things.

Another popular Youtuber, Tim Poole, released a video after Kirk’s death on why he believes some people are demon possessed. He does not go to church, but believes this explains the evil we are seeing today. He has millions of followers on his multiple channels.

It’s not just me who has noticed this spiritual awakening. In an article for CBN, Tré Goins-Phillips reported that American churches are seeing increased attendance since Charlie Kirk’s assassination.

This shouldn’t surprise us as Goins-Phillips explains in his article:

“In Scottish, “kirk” means “church,” a perhaps apt observation in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s murder — and the surge in church attendance that seems to have followed his assassination.”

He also pointed to an interview that Kirk had with Deseret News earlier this year, where he outlined his wish for people “getting back to the church, getting back to faith, getting married, having children.”

“That is the type of conservatism that I represent, and I’m trying to paint a picture of virtue, of lifting people up, not just staying angry,” Kirk added.

Goins-Phillip cited several others who announced on social media they were going to church.

This includes TikToker, Brittany, who stated, “We went to church today. It was the first time in 20 years for me and Devin. It was the first time for our children. After the events of the last week, Devin and I had a lot of talking that was happening between us about the type of life that we want for ourselves and how we want our boys to be.”

Another X user, Girl Patriot, talked about “The Charlie Effect.”

She posted a video of a man who “has never owned a suit. He’s never believed in God. He’s going to church to wear it because of Charlie. He wants to be a better father, husband, and leader for his family.”

So what is drawing people to church?

Matt Zerrusen helped found the Catholic organization, Newman Ministry. He gave his opinion on why Catholic churches are seeing a 15% increase in attendance since the assassination.

“So many people are asking, ‘What do I do?’ ‘What is evil?’ ‘How does God allow this?”, Zerrusen said in an interview with the Catholic News Agency.

Like Tim Poole, many have been shocked by the reality of evil.

Second century Christian apologist, Tertullian (155 to 220 AD) watched as Rome slaughtered Christians in North Africa where he lived. They were being fed to lions in colosseums. Thrown in jails. Sawed in half and butchered with swords.

The ground was soaked with blood of Christians. Yet, the more Rome persecuted the church, its numbers grew. It defied reason.

Tertullian explained this seeming contradiction with these words, “the blood of Christians is seed.”

Two hundred years later, Augustine of Hippo, expanded those words in a sermon. He said, “the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church.”
