We don’t have all the details of what led up to this, but in a recent video posted on X, famed British podcaster and comedian, Russell Brand said that he was speaking in tongues, Charisma News reported.

Over the past year or so, Brand has posted several videos discussing his journey in the Christian faith and somewhere along this path, he was filled with the Holy Spirit and started speaking in tongues (Acts 19:6).

But he had questions about this somewhat strange gift.

Hey, I’ve been speaking in tongues. I’ve been praying in tongues… I thought, ‘Anyone can do that, it’s just babbling incoherent nonsense.’ But I’ve been doing it,” Brand said.

Even the Apostle Paul admits that speaking in tongues is strange and said if a person walked into a service and heard a bunch of people speaking in tongues, they would think everyone is crazy (1 Corinthians 14:23).

This is why Paul insisted that only two or three people speak in tongues during a church service and these tongues must then be interpreted.

But here is what make tongues so strange. Paul writes that when we speak in tongues, “my spirit prays, but my mind is unproductive” (1 Corinthians 14:14).

Humans are made up of a body, soul and spirit.

The body of course is that incredible contraption in which we live and function on the earth.

The spirit is the invisible essence of who we are which exists separate from our human body and lives eternally. As he was being stoned, Stephen uttered these words, ‘Lord Jesus, receive my spirit’ (Acts 7:59), just before he died. Because, he knew his life continued on.

The soul, which is made up the mind will and emotion, is how our spirit expresses itself through our human body.

So Paul writes when we pray tongues, it is our spirit, empowered by the Holy Spirit, that is praying not our mind. Of course, because our mind is being completely bypassed, we have no idea what we are saying.

Then Paul explains, “For the one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people, but to God; for no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries” (1 Corinthians 14:2).

Though we do not understand what we are praying, God knows. As we allow the Holy Spirit to pray through us in this way, we can also be confident that we are praying God’s will.

So if you are at a loss on how to pray in a particular situation, speak in Tongues and allow the Holy Spirit to pray for you.

But aside from that there is also a personal advantage to speaking in Tongues. Paul writes that “one who speaks in a tongue edifies himself” (1 Corinthians 14:4) and Jude encourages us to build up our personal faith, by “praying in the Holy Spirit,” (Jude 20).
