When their son was born, Troy and Gloria Akins were told immediately that Colt was experiencing kidney failure and needed immediate surgery to prepare him for dialysis, Christian Learning reports.
But there was more bad news. The nephrologist said there was no known cure for this problem and without a transplant, the average person only lives five to ten years on dialysis.
The family took Colt home and started the daily ordeal of dialysis, which would dominate their family for the next three years. Family outings were basically impossible.
“I remember one night, me and Lauren, my sister, stayed up all night long. And he was just throwing up constantly, and all I could hear was my mom crying and yelling… Colt just screaming in pain,” Colt’s sister, Emily, recalled.
But then, a friend at church encouraged the Akins to watch the testimony of another young girl, Hanna Terradez, who suffered from the same condition but had been miraculously healed through Andrew Wommack’s ministry.
After listening to the testimony, the Akins started following Wommack and determined that there was a potential for a miracle because Jesus not only died for our sins but also for our healing.
“But He was pierced for our offenses,
(Isaiah 53:5 NASV)
He was crushed for our wrongdoings;
The punishment for our well-being was laid upon Him and by His wounds we are healed.”
“There were verses that I just couldn’t let go of. Things like, you know. If you speak to the mountain that… that it will move,” Gloria added. “And if you lay hands on the sick, that they shall recover.”
After dealing with this constant need for dialysis for almost three years, in an act of desperation, Troy rushed to Colt’s bedroom late one night, laid hands on his son, and prayed for healing.
“When I lay hands on him, I am yelling and screaming,” Troy recalled. “Whatever is bad get out. In the name of Jesus, in the name of Jesus, in the name of Jesus, you are healed.”
After that one brief declaration of healing, almost immediately, Colt’s testing numbers started improving.
It reached a point, where the family wondered if they could stop dialysis. The doctor agreed to give it a try and said they could take Colt off dialysis one night a month.
When Colt’s lab results showed encouraging results, the family asked if they could take him off dialysis one night a week, and the doctors again agreed.
When the lab tests continued to show positive results, Gloria asked the nurse if they could take Colt off dialysis, two times, a week, she was a bit surprised when the nurse said no.
Gloria asked why not, and the nurse replied that at this point medical staff were not really sure if he needed dialysis at all, because Colt’s kidneys were now fully functioning.
Colt had been miraculously healed of an incurable affliction.
Divine healing is available today, and it is one of the gifts that the Holy Spirit distributes to members of the Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:9).
The encouraging thing for me is how the Holy Spirit used Colt’s father, not some big Christian personality, to heal his son.
So pray for the sick.
