After a video went viral of nearly 200 students at Alabama’s Auburn University being water baptized in a lake located on campus, the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) sent a letter to the university expressing the organization’s displeasure, The Blaze reports.
Apparently, the FFRF was upset that Hugh Freeze, who is the head coach of Auburn’s football team, actually helped baptize some of those students during his personal free time.
FFRF stated that Freeze’s participation was a violation of the US Constitution’s Establishment Clause.
In response, Tyson Langhofer, who is a senior litigator with Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), stated that he believed FFRF’s letter was in fact unconstitutional as it threatened Freeze’s constitutional right to freedom of religion:
“As the Supreme Court recently reaffirmed in the Coach Kennedy case, religious coaches and students have the right to engage in religious activities on campus in their private capacity. FFRF’s desire to silence religious students sends a clear message: ‘You are not welcome here.’ That’s unconstitutional,” Langhofer said.
The baptism took place on Sept. 12, 2023, in response to a Christian gathering at the university’s arena attended by approximately 5,000 students.
ADF is an organization dedicated to preserving religious freedom in America and has successfully fought several cases at the Supreme Court.
