There was an interesting article on Israel365 News about the supermoon that appeared on Wednesday, August 30, 2023.
A supermoon takes place when the moon is at its closest point to Earth during its elliptical orbit. At this point, the moon will appear 14% larger and 30% brighter compared to when it’s at the farthest point.
Israel365 is operated by Orthodox Jews who though they have not accepted Jesus as the Jewish Messiah do believe the Jewish Messiah will soon be coming.
While blood moons or red moons are looked upon as significant end-times markers, Orthodox Jews also consider supermoons or blue moons as they are sometimes called as signs the Jewish Messiah’s arrival is imminent.
They specifically cite a passage out of Isaiah that speaks of the moon being like the light of the sun as evidence of this:
26 And the light of the full moon will be like the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be seven times brighter, like the light of seven days, on the day the Lord binds up the fracture of His people and heals the wound He has inflicted. (Isaiah 30:26 NASV)
The supermoon that appeared on August 30 is actually referred to as a blue moon, which is the name given to the second supermoon when two appear in the same month. A supermoon also appeared on August 1, 2023.
Having two supermoons in a single month is a rare event and the next occurrence will not take place for 14 years.
But we do know from scripture that one of the purposes of the expanse of heaven was to provide signs to people:
14 Then God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and they shall serve as signs and for seasons, and for days and years; (Genesis 1:14 NASV)
Now to be clear blood moons and supermoons do appear regularly, but in terms of end-times theology, they become significant when they appear in conjunction with other events.
For example in the Book of Revelation, a blood moon is mentioned in Revelation 6:12-13 taking place around the same time as three other events, a great earthquake, an eclipse of the sun, and the earth being hit by what appears to be several asteroids or meteors.
What is interesting about this most recent supermoon is that experts warn that its appearance at the same time as Idalia, a massive hurricane that made landfall in Florida, could potentially cause an even larger storm surge, The Daily Wire reports.
CNN meteorologist Chad Myer explains:
“Right now, today and tonight, the moon is 18,000 miles closer than normal because the moon’s orbit isn’t a circle. It’s kind of a big egg,” Myers told anchor Jake Tapper. “So because it’s closer, you get about a 5% higher pull because it’s 5% closer than normal.”
