Archaeologists are reporting they have found the remains of the lost community of Rungholt in Denmark’s Wadden Sea, Religion News Service reports.

Oddly, Rungholt, often referred to as Atlantis of the North, has been part of Denmark’s church lore since the 14th century.

According to tradition, on Christmas Day in the 1400s, a group of men in the community tried to deceive a local priest by having him give the last rites to a pig that they had disguised as a man.

The priest refused to do it and after the men mercilessly beat the priest, he reportedly asked God for justice.

Shortly after this, God told the priest to leave the community which was later wiped out by a massive storm surge killing all its inhabitants.

Well, apparently Rungholt’s six-century-old, legendary, status, has officially come to an end.

In May 2023, archaeologists announced they have found Rungholt, or at least the remains of its parish. This confirms that the community was indeed wiped out by a massive storm surge that hit the area on January 15 or 16, 1362, killing tens of thousands of people.

The marshlands where Rungholt once stood became accessible in the early 1900s as a result of the Wadden Sea’s changing tides.

In addition to the Parish church, archaeologists have discovered 54 other mounds that might be the locations of other buildings that were once part of this community.
