It seems that nearly every time I clicked on a link to view a YouTube video over the past few weeks, I was forced to watch an ad for Xbox’s new video game, Diablo IV.
The imagery in the ad without a doubt is clearly satanic.
Scheduled for release today, June 6, 2023, in an article for Charisma News, James Lasher says that Diablo IV actually features one of the few demons that are mentioned by name in the Bible, Lilith.
The Bible only provides the actual names of a handful of Demons which includes:
- Satan: Also referred to also as Lucifer, Satan is described as the god of this world (2 Corinthians 4:4).
- Legion: When Jesus encountered a demon-possessed man in the Gerasenes and asked his name, the demonic being answered that its name was Legion (Mark 5:9).
- Abaddon: In Revelation 9:9-11, Abaddon is described as the angel of the abyss a king of the demonic spirits living there that will be released in the end times.
- Beezelbul: This demonic being is mentioned in Matthew 12:23-24. when Jesus delivered a man from an evil spirit. The Pharisees accused Christ of doing it by the power of Beezelbul, who is described as the Prince of Demons.
- Python: Another possible naming involves the spirit of python mentioned in Acts 16:16 when Paul delivered a young woman from the spirit of divination, in Greek it means literally the spirit of python.
Lilith is mentioned only once in the Bible, and was used when the prophet Isaiah was describing the creatures that will haunt Edom after its destruction:
The desert creatures will meet with the wolves,
The goat also will cry to its kind.
Yes, the night-bird (literally in the Hebrew Lilith) will settle there
And will find herself a resting place. (Isaiah 34:14 NASV)
Though we are not provided any additional information about Lilith, according to Jewish tradition it referred to a female demon that would attack people in their sleep.
Most commentators agree that Isaiah was referring to this particular demon in his prophecy about Edom, even though many Bible translations render the word as a night-bird, night creature or night monster.
According to the Pulpit Commentary, Lilith is derived from leilah which refers to night. More specifically, it describes a female evil spirit that haunts the night and tries to seduce men, and as well specifically tries to attack and kill children.
Some have speculated that Solomon may have actually been referring to Lilith when he warned about the seductress in Proverbs 2:18-19, because of its ability to lead men to Sheol or hell.
In the Song of the Sages, which was part of the Dead Sea Scrolls discovery, there is also a reference to Lilith. Though not part of the Biblical canon, the book provides insight on how the Jewish rabbis viewed Lilith.
It is described as a demon that falls upon men without warning and tries to lead them away from understanding:
And I, the Instructor, proclaim His glorious splendour so as to frighten and to te[rrify] all the spirits of the destroying angels, spirits of the bastards, demons, Lilith, howlers, and [desert dwellers] … and those which fall upon men without warning to lead them astray from a spirit of understanding and to make their heart and their … desolate during the present dominion of wickedness and predetermined time of humiliations for the sons of lig[ht], by the guilt of the ages of [those] smitten by iniquity – not for eternal destruction, [bu]t for an era of humiliation for transgression.[47]
But as Lasher points out this female demon, Lilith, will be featured prominently in Diablo IV that will be played by millions around the world where it is portrayed as a demon that wants to “give freedom to humanity.”
According to Lasher, the gameplay involves human sacrifice, violence, blood magic, Pentagrams, and even other demonic characters such as Baal, which is described as one of the Lords of hell.
“With the release of this game, thousands upon thousands of social media posts from fans of the Diablo series are raving about ‘their queen’ and how much they love Lilith,” Lasher writes. “There are many who dress up as her and stream playing the game to audiences of thousands on platforms such as Twitch and YouTube Gaming.”
At the very least the game may desensitize many to the realities of the demonic realm and for perhaps the more vulnerable open them up to this demonic spirit.
