Devil Worship? What is that?

Have you heard the claim that Climate Change is now a religion? Some people believe that. If you want to know more, try an Internet search with those keywords.

Also, we have people with strong convictions about sexual orientation and gender transition. Those beliefs can become like the meaning of life for the people involved.

Radical ideas can be like a religion. Some critics claim that many of these ideas came together at the recent Grammy Awards:

So, have you noticed the talk about religions centered on the person of Satan? For example, there is some interest in “After School Satan Club” meetings for children in public schools.

Also, there is a religious organization, that we might call a church, named the “Temple of Satan.” Again, an Internet search with those keywords will produce many discussions and articles.

One member was interviewed and claimed that the followers of the Satanic religion were really Atheists. They did not believe in an actual person with that name and image:

If we invert the Satanist argument, we could believe that some Atheists are actually Satan worshipers. It is logical to flip the speaker’s statement, although I don’t want to get into that argument. Atheists and Satanists can work that out between themselves, and I am on neither side of that argument.

If Satan worshipers do not really worship Satan but are really Atheists, it is odd that they pray to a person, with a name and a backstory, and they have images of that being.

That does seem to be a religion, and it does not fit my image of an Atheist club.

But what do I know? I am writing as a Christian, and there are some things to say from that point of view.

Satanism seems to be a spin-off of Christianity and a place where Jesus gets a lot of negative respect:

Notice, in the video in the article cited above, that one religious symbol is an inverted cross. The symbol of the object that Jesus died on is turned upside down but still used to make a dramatic statement.

Ceremonies like Satanic Masses are inverted versions of ceremonies in some Christian churches. The Mass is not a part of other religions.

There doesn’t seem to be any mention of devils and demons in other religions like Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism, and those religions have their own traditions.

Also, There were many pagan temples in Bible times, and the gods worshiped there could be compared to demons and devils, but that was not much of a concern.

In the Christian Bible, members of the orthodox and Godly religions were called children of the Devil:

You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. (John 8:44)

Those words were spoken to religious leaders at the Temple in Jerusalem.

Jesus’ concern was about the corrupt behavior of the people who claimed to worship God. Those corrupt people who led the worship of God were called children of their father the Devil.

Shortly after that criticism, Jesus who spoke was arrested, given a pretend trial, and executed on a cross. The religious leaders from the Temple organized the trial and execution.

They fit the description.

The worst damage was done by people who claimed to be good, and godly, but who were corrupt and dishonest; under the surface. Those people were identified with Satan, and we all have some modern story about someone who reflects that truth.

Today, in some new religions, we have people who circle around the person of Jesus, and mostly oppose Him and his followers. They seem to have a fascination with that person, and to me, they are like rebels opposed to the truth and force that they were raised with.

That description could fit many Satanists and Atheists.

For all of us, the great question is; What do we do with that person of Jesus? Humanity can’t seem to escape from that challenge.
