The United Nations has become a joke and that is no more obvious than by the recent appointment of North Korea to chair the UN’s Conference on Disarmament. This group is responsible for negotiating the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.
If you were looking for a country least qualified to head such an organization, North Korea would certainly be one of the top five candidates.
So far this year, Kim Jong-un, the country’s Supreme Leader, has launched six ballistic missiles, nearly matching all of North Korea’s output in 2021 as well as two cruise missiles.
Hillel Neuer, the executive director of the Geneva-based organization, UN Watch, that monitors UN Activities had this to say about the recent announcement:
“North Korea is the world’s foremost weapons proliferator. The regime builds its own nuclear weapons in contravention of its treaty commitments. Pyongyang sells missile and atomic know-how to other rogue regimes in blatant violation of U.N. sanctions.”
“A country that flagrantly violates UN Security Council resolutions explicitly prohibiting its ballistic missile launches,” Neurer added, “should be barred from any formal positions in UN bodies dealing with such vital matters as nuclear weapons disarmament.”
Of course, this is pretty much par for the course at the UN. Not only does the organization have China, Libya, and Venezuela sitting on its human rights council, last year members elected Iran to lead the UN Commission on the Status of Women.
