Efforts are underway again this year to try to cancel Christmas, or at least the religious side of it.

True North (TN) reports that a large market fair, held annually in Toronto just before Christmas, underwent a name change. Instead of being called the ‘Christmas Market’, it has been officially renamed the ‘Distillery Winter Village.’

TN reports that the event will focus more on the “shopping and dining experience” rather than on the traditional Christmas trappings.

TN also adds that the person who had organized the previous ‘Christmas Markets’ will not be involved in planning this year’s event.

Liberty Counsel’s Naughty or Nice list

Each year, Liberty Counsel, a nonprofit legal organization dedicated to protecting religious freedoms in the US, publishes its annual ‘naughty or nice’ list.

This includes ‘nice’ companies that use the word Christmas in their advertising and labelling and allow employees to say ‘Merry Christmas’ when greeting people.

The ‘naughty’ list is made up of those companies censoring the word ‘Christmas’ and replacing it with less religious terms such as the ‘holiday season’.

In this year’s new release, LC notes that for years Walmart was on the naughty list when it banned employees from wishing people a Merry Christmas’, but no longer, it is now on the ‘nice’ list.

Others on the ‘nice list’ include:

• Belk,
• JCPenney,
• Walmart,
• Staples, and
• Kohl’s

Those on the naughty list include:

• Barnes & Noble,
• Dick’s Sporting Goods,
• Gap, and
• TJ Maxx
