There were threes stories this week that may have ominous ties to the end times. I am not suggesting that they are literal fulfillment of what the prophets saw, but at the very least they reveal how easily it could happen.
The first took place in Communist China where according to Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), the leaders of Huang Fei, a village located near China’s Western border, put up a sign warning people against converting to Christianity. They specifically warned of financial consequences if people choose to believe in Jesus Christ.
According to CSW, this could include fines and even confiscation of livestock.
CSW also reports that the village of Li initiated regulations that permit people in that village to specifically target and isolate Christians. It is uncertain what the consequences of this targeting would be, but again it’s probably financial.
Though this is disturbing news, it also reveals that those in positions of authority are becoming increasing threatened by Christianity indicating it must be spreading.
In his vision of the end times recorded in the Book of Revelation, the Apostle John saw a day when people who refused to accept the mark of the Beast would be unable to buy or sell goods. They would be punished financially:
15 The second beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed. 16 It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, 17 so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name.
(Revelation 13:15-17 NIV)
So while this first story out of China reveals a willingness to punish people financially for simply believing in Jesus, a second story adds an ominous twist.
Some are warning that a scanner recently introduced by Amazon, that will allow people to make purchases by using the palm of their hand, has more than a passing similarity to the mark of the beast that the Apostle John warned about in the passage above.
The Apostle John saw a day when people would not be able to buy or sell without this mark located on either a person’s hand or forehead.
According to CBN, this scanner, called Amazon One, has already been set up in two Amazon Go stores in Seattle. Essentially this device will scan your unique palm print, which is connected to your account, allowing the purchase to be processed through your payment cards. The hand scanner is not mandatory at this point.
Though the Apostle John seems to imply that he saw a specific mark, some believe this new device is connected to the end time events that the apostle warned about.
Whether it is or not, at the very least these two stories show how easily it could happen.
Of course, we will top it all off with a third story about how the moon is turning blood-red from the smoke associated with the California fires:
In his description of the Day of the Lord, the Joel prophesied that columns of smoke would darken the sun and turn the moon blood-red (Joel 2:30-31).
Again, I don’t consider what is happening in California as a direct fulfillment of this verse, because Joel’s description suggests it would be a world-wide phenomena, everyone would be seeing a blood-red moon.
And along this line, the columns (plural) of smoke Joel mentions are commonly associated with volcanoes, which suggests that the blood moons will be caused by a significant increase in volcanic activity around the world.
Nevertheless, if nothing else these three stories from this past week serve as a warning sign of what lies ahead.
