Referred to as “Professor Lockdown,” Neil Ferguson is the disgraced British epidemiologist from Imperial College that was behind the lockdowns that have rocked the world economy.

His computer model predicted upwards of 2.2 million COVID deaths in the US and 500,000 in Britain and this caused many governments to implement Draconian stay-at-home orders.

But he fell into disgrace after he was caught breaking the very stay-at-home orders that he pushed for in Britain and when others, who studied the coding behind his computer model, described it as antiquated and utterly unreliable.

But in a recent presentation to Britain’s House of Lords Science and Technology Committee, Ferguson recanted of sorts when asked why Sweden, that did not implement a full lockdown, had better per capita COVID numbers than Britain, which did.

The Daily Mail writes:

Professor Ferguson appeared to praise Sweden for keeping infections low without the economically crippling curbs and said ‘they have gone quite a long way to [achieving] the same effect’.

But when he was grilled by peers about whether the measures were really necessary in the UK, he pointed out that Sweden’s infection rate had not fallen as rapidly as the Britain’s.

The UK has a death rate of 575 people per million, while Sweden’s is significantly lower at 436 per million. As well as fewer deaths, Sweden’s GDP actually grew in the first quarter of 2020, suggesting it might avoid the worst of the economic fallout from the crisis…..

Professor Ferguson admitted he was stumped as to why Sweden had recorded just 4,000 Covid deaths when some calculations estimated the country would suffer 90,000 without the [lockdown] measures. 

He added: ‘I think it’s an interesting question. It’s clear there have been significant social distancing in Sweden. 

While universities, and entertainment and sporting events were closed, Sweden promoted social distancing and allowed businesses and schools for children under the age of 16 to remain open. Despite the moderate lockdown their rates are running about mid pack in terms of deaths.

Sweden took the “herd mentality” approach allowing people to catch the virus and develop an immunity. While many are predicting a second COVID wave this next winter because people were isolated from the virus, it may not have the same impact in Sweden.

The big failure around the world was not properly quarantining the elderly and nursing care homes along those with underlying health issues who were most vulnerable to the virus.
