Government unions in the UK are expressing outrage after a leaked report indicated that the government is considering a two-year pay freeze for government workers, as the UK Government copes with an expected £337billion deficit because of the pandemic.
Prior to the pandemic, the government was anticipating a shortfall of £55billion.
Union leaders are calling the decision “morally bankrupt” and a “betrayal.”
Meanwhile, people in the private sector paying the salaries of government employees through taxes are seeing their wages cut or hours of work slashed and those were the lucky ones. One study estimated that 6.5 million jobs have been lost in the private sector because of the government-mandated lockdown.
