In February, I reported on a case of demon possession that affected the Ammons family in Gary, Indiana. There were a number of significant manifestations (including walking up a wall and ceiling backwards) seen by police officers, medical professionals and welfare officials.
There has recently been another incidence of possession reported in Mexico. Though not as documented as the earlier case, the three people involved experienced many of the same manifestations as the family affected in Gary, Indiana including growling.
Three Americans, Alexandra Huerta, 22, and her brother Sergio, 23, and their cousin Fernando Cuevas, 18, were playing on a Ouija board in a home in the village of San Juan Tiacotenco in southern Mexico.
Ouija boards, also called a ‘spirit board,’ are used to communicate with the spirit realm. The board has a number of words, the alphabet and numbers on it. People put their hands on a moveable heart-shaped object and a spirit will move the person’s hand over the board pointing to various words and letters and through this process communicate with people.
Because of its occult overtones, many evangelical and catholic groups warn against playing with this board.
Shortly after the three started playing the game, Alexandra began to experience possession-like symptoms. She began to growl and enter a “trance-like” state.
The other two, Sergio and Fernando, also started experiencing possession symptoms including deafness, hallucinations and blindness.
The three were rushed to the hospital by ambulance. The medics were forced to restrain Alexandra because she was thrashing about uncontrollably. The parents called the ambulance after the Catholic priest refused to deliver the trio because they were not members of his church.
Speaking on behalf of the hospital, Victor Demesa described the care of the three as being very complicated due to the multiple symptoms. The hospital would not comment on claims the trio were possessed by evil spirits.
Demesa said:
“It appeared as if they were in a trance-like state, apparently after playing a Ouija board. They spoke of feeling numbness, double vision, blindness, deafness, hallucinations, muscle spasm and difficulty swallowing.”
The Bible and demon-possession
In most cases, Jesus treated physical ailments as health issues and healed the person.
But at times, Jesus cast out demons to cure a person, because the problem was not medical but spiritual. Some of the physical ailments occasionally attributed to demonic influences included blindness, deafness, convulsions and the inability to speak. We can see a record of some of the physical symptoms associated with possession in Matthew 9:32-33 (mute); 12:22 (blind and mute); 17:18 (convulsions); Mark 5:1-20 (violent behavior — man restrained by chains); 9:25 (deaf and mute spirit) and Luke 4:33-36 (passed out); Luke 13:10-17 (sickness).
While we live in a world that tries to play down the existence of the demonic, it is very real. But Jesus has given us authority over it:
Jesus summoned His twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every kind of disease and every kind of sickness. (Matthew 10:1 NASV)
The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” (Luke 10:17 NASV)
