Robert Downey Jr is one of my favourite actors. I enjoyed his roles as Tom Stark in the Iron Man series and as Sherlock Holmes.
Sometime back, Downey was being interviewed by Jon Stewart on The Daily Show, when he made this surprising statement in response to Stewart’s question on optimism:
“Here’s what I heard.” Downey said. “This was a discussion between a Russian military guy and Chuck Missler, who’s a Christian. … Love Chuck. … He asked the Russian guy is there hope for Western civilization,”
“The Russian guy said you have to understand the difference between an optimist and a pessimist. The optimist believes the future is uncertain. The pessimist is always right. So it’s our duty to be optimists but clearly the pessimist has more information, because he’s always right.”
Who is Chuck Missler?
I have followed Chuck Missler’s ministry for a number years. After a 30 year career in the private sector including work in the U.S. Navy for the Department of Guided Missiles and as CEO for a number of public companies, Chuck and his wife Nancy founded Koinonia House. A major focus of this ministry has been end time events. Chuck has written a number of articles and books on Biblical prophecy, including his book entitled “Church in the End Times.”
The Middle East in Bible prophecy
On November 29, 1947, the United Nations passed a Resolution calling for the establishment of the nation of Israel in Palestine, which was then formed in 1948. Since that time, there has been a rising interest in Bible prophecy which spoke of a future day when Israel would be restored as a nation.
Therefore say, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “Though I had removed them far away among the nations and though I had scattered them among the countries, yet I was a sanctuary for them a little while in the countries where they had gone.”’ Therefore say, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “I will gather you from the peoples and assemble you out of the countries among which you have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel.”’ (Ezekiel 11: 16-17 NASV)
But Israel is not the only nation spoken of in Bible prophecy. Others include Syria discussed in Isaiah 17:1:
“Behold, Damascus is about to be removed from being a city And will become a fallen ruin.”
This verse speaks of the utter destruction of Damascus — the capital city of Syria. Since Damascus is one of the oldest continuously populated cities in the world, some believe this verse is speaking of a yet unfulfilled future event.
Russia is also playing an increasing role in the Middle East politics and many link Russia to the bear mentioned in Daniel 7:5:
“And behold, another beast, a second one, resembling a bear. And it was raised up on one side, and three ribs were in its mouth between its teeth; and thus they said to it, ‘Arise, devour much meat!’
The bear is often used by Russians and others to symbolize the country.
What is certain, the Middle East and Israel are increasingly becoming a hot issue in world politics, and perhaps not surprisingly, the Bible prophets spoke of a future massive conflict between Israel and the surrounding nations, that would draw in many other nations.
Pray for Robert Downey Jr
In past interviews, Downey has referred to himself as a Jewish-Buddhist which I was surprised to find actually has its own page on Wikipedia, where you will find Downey listed. Downey’s father was half Irish and half Russian Jew.
But there also seems to be a Christian interest as well.
