Similar to what is happening in the US, the Canadian government of Justin Trudeau has gone soft on crime, lessening penalties and making it easier to get out on bail.
This has resulted in a predictable increase in criminal behavior, including car thefts, which have seen a dramatic increase in recent years.
In fact, car theft is now considered a national crisis in Canada. It has gotten so bad that Prime Minister Trudeau was recently forced to hold a summit to pretend he is concerned about the problem his government created.
One of the major players in softening the crime penalties has been the Canadian government’s Federal Justice Minister.
According to recent documents, the taxpayer-funded Toyota Highlanders purchased for the Justice Minister’s office have been stolen three times in the past three years.
The National Post writes:
The documents, shared on social media by CBC reporter Kate McKenna, show Justice Minister Arif Virani’s government-owned 2021 Toyota Highlander XLE was stolen in November but later recovered. The same vehicle was also stolen and recovered last February when David Lametti was justice minister.
In February 2021, a 2019 Toyota Highlander was also stolen during Lametti’s time as justice minister, and never recovered.
Since these Highlanders are all paid for by taxpayers, the federal Justice Ministers really don’t care, as they are personally not out of pocket or inconvenienced by the theft.
According to the latest insurance data, the Toyota Highlander was the fifth most popular vehicle targeted by thieves in 2022. Organized crime gangs are responsible for the theft of many of the high-end vehicles that often end up for sale in the Middle East, Africa or Asia.
