The Daily Mail’s ten most likely world-ending events

There has been talk in recent months about apocalyptic events that could lead to the end of the world. Some of it has undoubtedly been sparked by COVID and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

In an article for the Daily Mail, Sam Tonkin recently discussed the ten most likely scenarios that could result in the end of humanity, from a secular and scientific point of view.

Of course, the Bible also warns of a series of horrific apocalyptic events that would devastate the world leading to the second coming of Christ.

With that as the theme, I want to provide a Biblical perspective on Tonkin’s ten world-ending events.

Giant Asteroid Hits Earth

The first world-ending devastation that Tonkin had on his list was a giant asteroid hitting the Earth. Of course, many believe it was an asteroid that selectively killed off every dinosaur, but somehow spared the life of other creatures.

62 | Does a solitary Bible verse explain what happened to dinosaurs? UPDATED

This idea has become such a serious concern that NASA and other space agencies are now monitoring our solar system for potential asteroids and recently even successfully deflected a 520ft-wide (160m) space rock called Dimorphos by having a spacecraft smash into it.

Though NASA is trying to develop a system to protect the earth from this danger, one is going to slip through.

In his vision of the end times, the Apostle John saw a monstrous-sized asteroid, the size of a flaming mountain, slamming into one of the earth’s oceans destroying a third of the boats and a third of the fish.

The second angel sounded, and something like a great mountain burning with fire was hurled into the sea; and a third of the sea became blood, and a third of the creatures which were in the sea and had life, died; and a third of the ships were destroyed. (Revelation 8:8-9 NASV)

Killer Robots Kill Off Humanity

Tonkin suggests that killer robots are the second most likely way to bring an end to humanity.

Robots and drones are already being used and developed for military purposes. This combined with the arrival of Artificial intelligence, AI, is causing great consternation among scientific minds.

There is concern that AI could one day be smarter than humans and develop a mind of its own and combined with military technology turn on humans.

“In 2018, renowned MIT professor Max Tegmark warned that humans could one day become enslaved by the intelligent machines they create,” Tonkin writes.

“While the UN Secretary-General has previously called for a ban on ‘machines that have the power to kill’,” he added.

Though the Bible does not specifically refer to killer robots turning on humanity, in Revelation 9:1-11, the Apostle John saw a horde of creatures being released from the abyss, that were allowed to torment humans for five months.

Personally, I believe these locust-like creatures are demonic, not mechanical, but that is just my opinion.

The Eruption of a Super Volcano

The third most likely way for the end of the world Tonkin suggests is through the eruption of a supervolcano. It would send out so much ash that it would block out the sun causing temperatures to fall and basically devastate life on the earth.

Tonkin writes that there are about 20 supervolcanos in the world, including one beneath Yellowstone Park. Other locations include New Zealand, Italy, and Indonesia.

Well, the Bible states volcanos will play a role in the end times.

The prophet Joel writes:

I will display wonders in the sky and on the earth,
Blood, fire, and columns of smoke.
31 The sun will be turned into darkness,
And the moon into blood,
Before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.
(Joel 2:30-31 NASV)

Joel says that the great and awesome Day of the Lord will be marked by columns of smoke, the classic sign of volcanic activity. Note how Joel has this in the plural (columns), meaning there will be several volcanic ertuptions that would pour so much ash into the sky that the sun will turn dark.

Joel also mentions the word blood in verse 31, meaning that people will be dying because of this.

Alien Invasion

The fourth most likely way for the world to end according to Tonkin is through an alien invasion.

I have always found it odd how atheists and the like deny the existence of God, arguing there is no evidence God exists, but believe in aliens even though there is no existence they exist.

This is just my opinion, but movies like Independence Day should be treated as science fiction, not a documentary.

While the Bible does not refer to an alien invasion as such, it does speak of an invasion of creatures that did not belong here.

When Satan and a third of the angels rebelled against God, the Arch angel Gabriel drove them out of heaven down to Earth:

And there was war in heaven, Michael and his angels waging war with the dragon. The dragon and his angels waged war, and they did not prevail, and there was no longer a place found for them in heaven. And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. (Revelation 12:7-9 NASV)

The Sun Swallows the Earth

While Tonkin readily admits that the scenario of the sun swallowing the Earth will not happen for a few billion years, he lists it as the fifth most likely cause of Earth’s demise.

He writes that this will take place when the sun finally runs out of energy and will suck in the earth and other planets of our solar system into its death spiral.

Again, the Bible does not speak of such an event occurring. However, God does promise when it is all said and done, the Lord will not only provide humans with new resurrected bodies but a new earth and new heaven, which I suspect will include a new sun.

21 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. (Revelation 21:1-2 NASV)

The Reversal of the Earth’s Magnetic Poles

Scientists believe every so often the Earth’s magnetic North and South Poles flip and speculate (it is just speculation), that a temporary switch may have wiped out the Neanderthals, around 42,000 years ago because of massive climatic changes.

According to researchers, the magnetic strength of our north and south poles has declined by 5% suggesting that another switch is in the process. Others are not convinced it is going to happen in the near future.

The biggest concern is that during the shift, the Earth’s magnetic field will temporarily disappear, depleting our ozone layer and leaving the Earth vulnerable to the sun’s cosmic rays.

Does the Bible speak of this type of event?

I don’t think so, but the Bible does warn of extreme heat in the end times (Revelation 16:8-10). Maybe this is connected.

Pandemics and Plaques

Having experienced COVID, there are concerns that a much more deadly plague could devastate the earth. Ebola, which can only be spread through contact, is both extremely deadly and incurable. Should it ever become airborne it would bring absolute devastation.

Could this happen?

Well, there are concerns that even today scientists are genetically experimenting on some very dangerous viruses and such manipulations could bring devastating consequences.

The Bible does say that plagues will devastate the world in the days leading up to Christ’s second coming.

Jesus warned:

11 and there will be massive earthquakes, and in various places plagues and famines; and there will be terrible sights and great signs from heaven. (Luke 21:11 NASV)

Not all the plagues will necessarily be deadly. In his vision of the end times, the Apostle John saw a plague of ugly, painful sores (Revelation 16:2).

Earth is Sucked up by a Black Hole

While the possibility of the earth being sucked into a black hole is infinitely small, it nevertheless made Tonkin’s list.

This is because of two things.

Scientists believe they have seen a black hole in action. Measuring 24 billion miles (40 billion km) it is currently swallowing up planets in a Galaxy known as M87.

And secondly, they also warn there are ‘wandering black holes,’ that seem to be traveling through space.

“Only last month, NASA warned of an ‘invisible monster on the loose’, in the form of a ‘runaway’ black hole,” Tonkin explains.

“That is nowhere near us, but if a black hole the size of the moon was to pass through our solar system it could spell disaster.”

There are no mentions as far as I can tell, of black holes swallowing up the earth in the Bible.

Though some have wondered if God will use this method to destroy the current earth before creating a new one:

10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be discovered. 11 Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat! (2 Peter 2:10-12 NASV)

However, this is just speculation.

Nuclear War

With Russian officials having repeatedly threatened to use nuclear weapons since it began its invasion of Ukraine, people are becoming increasingly concerned about the possibility of nuclear war.

Even with that Tonkin only put this threat as ninth on his list.

But perhaps the bigger concern is that Iran is now close to developing its own nuclear weapons.

At that point, you are potentially giving terrorists, who are willing to die for their cause, a nuclear weapon.

I believe the Bible clearly speaks of nuclear war in the end times. But we need to read a bit between the lines as the ancient prophets were trying to describe the events they were seeing taking place thousands of years in the future when their most advanced weapons were a bow and arrow.

So how would they describe such an event?

Perhaps the best example is a reference to wormwood, which the Apostle John described as being like a burning torch. In other words, it was long and narrow or missile-like and fell from heaven.

When it hit the earth it transferred its wormwood (is this possibly describing radiation) to the earth and when men drank the water contaminated by wormwood, they died.

10 The third angel sounded, and a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of waters. 11 The star is named Wormwood; and a third of the waters became wormwood, and many people died from the waters because they were made bitter. (Revelation 8:10-11 NASV)

I believe, there are other verses that describe nuclear war as well. You can check out this podcast for more information:

Global Warming Devastates the Earth

The final thing that Tonkin suggested could bring about an end to the world is climate change or global warming. Certainly, the climate alarmists are convinced this could happen.

Tonkin adds that scientists are warning that this could lead to a mass extinction event.

“In terms of total annihilation, if global temperatures keep rising then it could lead to a runaway greenhouse effect that in the utmost of extremes would have Earth more closely resembling Venus, where the high on a typical day is 900°F (482°C),” Tonkin writes.

Clearly, that sounds terrifying.

No one disagrees that the earth has recently gone through a warming stage, but what is hotly debated is if man or natural forces are the cause of it.

We know for example that though almost barren today, the Northern Arctic was once filled with trees, ferns, and even crocodiles. At one time, the earth was obviously much warmer than it is today, and certainly, SUVs were not the cause of this, meaning there were natural forces at work.

So does the Bible warn of global warming in the end times?

Well, oddly it does:

And the fourth angel poured out his bowl upon the sun, and it was given power to scorch people with fire. And the people were scorched with fierce heat; and they blasphemed the name of God who has the power over these plagues, and they did not repent so as to give Him glory. (Revelation 16:8-9 NASV)

There are two things we see from this passage.

First, there would be periods of intense heat caused by angels manipulating our sun. The cause is both spiritual and natural and I don’t think we’ve experienced this judgment yet, which means it’s still coming.

But secondly, notice how the passage says that people did not repent. I found this a bit unusual, but understandable if we are convinced human activity is the cause of this unbearable heat and not God.
