Obeying voices in his head, on Sunday, March 6, 2016, former Marine Kyle Odom fired 12 rounds at the back of pastor Tim Remington, as he talked on his phone outside his Assemblies of God church in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, AG News reports.
Despite being 15 feet (4.57 m) away, only six bullets from Odom’s 45-caliber gun successfully hit their mark. The ones that did were deadly because they were hollow points, which means they mushroomed on impact, significantly expanding the damage.
Tim collapsed to the ground as Odom casually drove away in his car, completely unaware of a miracle that was soon to unfold.
By the time, he got into surgery, Tim only had 90% of his blood. Many believe the police officer first on the scene, who used his fingers to plug three holes out of which blood was gushing, may have saved the pastor’s life.
The hospital staff were shocked that Tim was still alive after surgery, as many thought he should have been dead on arrival, as most with multiple shot wounds usually don’t survive the ambulance ride.
There were miracles involving the six bullets that entered Tim’s body, and even among the six that didn’t.
The Six Bullets That Hit
One bullet hit Tim’s shoulder, glancing off the bone and hitting him in the head, leaving a dime-sized hole. Incredibly, that bullet stopped just outside the dura the outer area that protects the brain.
One doctor stated if you wanted a miracle, that was it.
Another bullet ended up one milometer away from his spine.
The remaining bullets shattered his right arm into 128 pieces, another hit his pelvis, and the other two hit the brachial plexus, a centralized area that handles electrical signals from the spinal cord to the arms and shoulders.
But despite all the wounds, Tim miraculously survived.
The Angel of the Lord and the Six Bullets That Didn’t Hit
The Psalmist writes “The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear Him, And rescues them” (Psalm 34:7) and that promise perhaps best describes what happened with the other six bullets.
Because for some, this is where we find the real miracle. Despite being a trained army vet and standing 15 feet (4.57 m) away, only half the 12 bullets that Odom fired entered Remington’s body.
Two of the bullets were never found, and one hit a car that was further away.
But the miracle lies with the remaining three bullets.
It is important to understand that Tim was not wearing body armor. He was wearing a suit, including pants, a vest, a shirt, a tie, and a suit jacket.
One of the spent bullets was found lying on the ground between Odom and Remington. Since it had mushroomed, this meant it had hit some invisible force and then bounced back.
A second mushroomed bullet was found on Remington’s back, lodged between his shirt and vest. The bullet had pierced his suit jacket and vest but was stopped dead by the thin fabric of his shirt.
If this bullet had penetrated, doctors believed, because of its location at the center of his back, it would have been a kill shot.
The third bullet was found in an even stranger location. The fully mushroomed bullet was found in the breast pocket on the front of the suit, just above Remington’s heart.
Tim’s wife Cindy told AG that the surgery took seven hours and a strange thing happened after it was over, when a nurse came to talk to them.
“He still had his scrubs and his cap on. He looked slowly and intentionally around the room, with about 20 of us still there at that time, and said in a solemn voice, ‘The devil did not get a victory today,’” Cindy said.
The nurse then abruptly turned around and left. It was such a meaningful, statement that Cindy later tried to track him down, but was unsuccessful. She has been left wondering if he was actually a nurse or an angel.
The Need to Forgive
Almost immediately, Tim knew he needed to forgive Odom, who was caught by police without incident a few days later. While in recovery, he was encouraging others to forgive Odom and pray for him.
His wife, Cindy, rarely thought about the attacker during Tim’s hospital stay but came to terms with it during the trial over the shooting.
The church’s CCTV had caught the whole incident on camera, and she felt this anger welling up in her as she saw her husband falling to the ground as Odom fired repeatedly at him.
But within moments knew she needed to forgive as well.
What Happened to the Shooter
Odom’s case is nothing short of bizarre.
Suffering from what some suspect is PSTD after time in Afghanistan, Odom believed that Martians had taken over the bodies of leaders of the country’s leaders, including Tim, who the former Marine believed was the ringleader. Those voices in Odom’s head were saying he needed to eliminate these leaders.
Odom, whose parents are actually Christians, was actually caught when he tried throwing the evidence for his strange beliefs over the gates of the White House.
Sitting in a wheelchair, Tim, who was still on the road to full recovery, was back preaching in the pulpit four months after the shooting.
Today, he is now walking and back in full-time ministry at his church.
Odom, whom Tim visits in jail, is still hearing voices in his head and could be paroled in two years.
