It has been known for years, that babies in the womb can feel pain with some research stating it can happen as early as 24 weeks, and other studies suggesting babies can feel pain in the first trimester. Whatever the case, this has horrid implications for abortions which some jurisdictions allow to take place up to the moment of birth.
In an article for Premier Christianity, James Evans provides information on potassium chloride which is approved for use in British hospitals for abortions. The drug, which is also used in some US states to execute murderers, is injected directly into a baby’s heart to kill it.
Evans explains what happens during this procedure:
“So what does potassium chloride do, and how would it feel to an unborn baby? A BBC article on Death Row describes it the following way: ‘to stop the heart, potassium chloride is administered directly after the vecuronium bromide. Without proper sedation, this stage would be extremely painful. The feeling has been likened to ‘liquid fire’ entering veins and snaking towards the heart. If the inmate is not fully paralysed, their muscles will also spasm uncontrollably, causing them to buck on the gurney, according to Dr Morley. This is because potassium sends signals to every muscle in the body to contract.‘”
With the baby experiencing a pain described as liquid fire, Evans’ research found that half of Britain’s hospitals administer a sedative to the baby to limit the pain. At least they are acknowledging that babies feel pain during the abortion. Another quarter will do it if requested by the mother.
