Alfa Illescas, 44, has been arrested by Miami-Dade police for allegedly vandalizing the inside walls of St. Timothy Catholic Church in Miami, the Christian Post report.

According to one report, after entering the church, video surveillance captured Illesca spray-painting the words ‘pigs’ and ‘perverts’ and upside-down crosses on the walls of the church on Saturday, June 10, 2023. The woman also allegedly damaged an altar to a saint.

Because the vandalism involved a Roman Catholic Church, several people left comments providing their opinions of this particular church.

One commenter, Toxic Thistle, described the Roman Catholic Church as “satanic to its core” and said that it had “perverted the Gospel.” Rachel Espinoza added “a Catholic Church isn’t even Christian.”

While I believe the Roman Catholic Church perverted the Gospel, I would not go as far as to describe it as Satanic.

I agree with Jacob Miller who responded to Toxic Thistle writing, “I’m no fan of the Catholic Church but they aren’t Satanists. Quiet (sic) the opposite… some of the best Christians I’ve ever met were Catholics.”

And I agree with George who added, “Their [Roman Catholic] theology is awry I agree, but there are genuine believers amongst them, or so I have heard. They also have access to Scripture, as do JWs, Mormons, and other such, so there is a better chance of them following the Lord than those who never read it.”

I think it’s important we separate the Roman Catholic institution from the people.

Many years ago, I met a Roman Catholic couple in Peru who were part of the Charismatic renewal and there is absolutely no doubt in my mind they were believers.

Though they defended the Roman Catholic Church and its theology, things turned when I asked if there was the same emphasis on Mary in the Charismatic services as there was in the main Catholic services. The husband admitted that there wasn’t. I suggested the Holy Spirit was leading them away from this errant theology and he said nothing.
