We all know Charles Darwin, but have you heard about Darwin’s doubts? Apparently, Charles Darwin, with his theory of evolution, expected scientists to find evidence that proved his theory. He did not know how some parts of evolution occurred, but he expected the evidence to be found.
Now, we have skeptics, who want to change Darwin’s Theory of Evolution.
Darwin lived and worked during the 1800s when religion was important and powerful. His famous book “On the Origin of Species” was published in 1859, and the world has never been the same.
Religious people don’t like a theory that claims life is an accident, with no God to create it. Atheists see Darwin’s theory as settled or established science, and as proof that they are correct. For them, God did not create life, and they believe there is no God. It all fits for them.
For believers, Darwin is a problem. Settled or established science means we really can’t question the ideas; they are accepted as facts by reputable scientists. I used to work in a large university, and I know, there are some things you never say if you want a tenure-track position as a professor. Expressing doubts about evolution could sink any career.
If you are wondering, I taught English language, and I just never brought up the topic of evolution, and tenure was not available. I am a Christian. People like me worship God because we believe He exists and that He made us.
Charles Darwin is described as a “Naturalist” although that was not a trade or profession, in his time. His father sent him to the University of Edinburgh to become a Medical Doctor, but apparently, he ‘neglected his studies.’ He flunked out of Medicine, so his father sent him to Cambridge University, where he studied to qualify as a minister in the Church of England. Darwin was like a graduate of a Bible College, or a Seminary.
His Theory of Evolution was spiritual as much as it was natural. Darwin gave us a world with no God.
For more than a hundred years, educated people have accepted that Darwin’s Theory of Evolution was a fact and not a theory. It was easy to believe that educated Atheists were more intelligent than believers. I knew how to keep my head down when I worked at a university.
We probably all know the first words in the Bible “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). The first chapter continues the story and gives us a detailed account of how God created life on Earth. The choices are clear, creation or evolution, yes or no. Believe in God, or follow the science.
Now, we may be surprised, but there are skeptical scientists who disagree with the science of Darwin:
The challenges to Darwin’s theory are not a religious argument. Experts claim that Darwin’s model does not fit what they know.
The linked article is long, but it might interest you. Some experts believe that we need a new theory of evolution:
The arguments from skeptical scientists seem to be that the new details don’t fit the old larger story. Darwin expected that scientists would prove his theory, after he published his first book. Others, after him, would discover the details.
According to the modern skeptics, that did not happen. This is not a religious argument, and not a way to prove that God exists. The science does not seem to be so settled and established.
Scientists don’t usually describe themselves as superstars, but one of the most famous evolutionary biologists is Richard Dawkins, who is also known as a convinced atheist. He is famous enough to be a celebrity, and he is convinced of the big picture, that the universe has evolved, with no creation or direction from God.
In the video below, notice that he is very confident of the general principles, and the larger story, but he struggles when he is asked about new details that are important to modern scientists:
The new Theory of Evolution, among skeptical scientists, is a huge shift in modern thinking. The ground has moved under our feet.
One result of the new skepticism is freedom. It is now reasonable to believe in God who made everything. The science is not so settled and established.
I made the earth; I created the people who live on it. It was me, my hands stretched out the sky. I give orders to all the heavenly lights. (Isaiah 45: 12)
For all things in heaven and on earth were created in him, all things, whether visible or invisible, whether thrones or dominions, whether principalities or powers; all things were created through him and for him. (Colossians 1: 16)
For believers, a new creation comes to an old creation:
