It’s impossible to miss the two endless arguments about impeaching the President of the United States and removing Britain from the European Union, Brexit. The impeachment argument has continued for months and Brexit for years. Armageddon is a popular cultural concept of a final battle that will bring an end to human history.
Are they all related somehow?
In the Bible, there is a persistent reference to a final battle that is prophesied to come. We are told that the nations of the world will attack Israel, to completely destroy it and God will defend Israel. The combined armies will assemble in the valley or plain of Megiddo, a wide space in northern Israel, Hor Megiddo in Hebrew. Megiddo is a town and our word ‘Armageddon’ is from the Hebrew name of the flat space nearby.
The Bible also tells us about the “Valley of Jehoshaphat” where more of the same destruction will happen. That valley is probably at Jerusalem, south of Hor Megiddo.
Joel chapter three is the source for the “Battle Hymn of the Republic” a theme for the U.S. military:
It’s also the source of the title for the novel “The Grapes of Wrath” and there is a video game named “Carmageddon” where people do violent things with cars. I have never seen the game, but we all get the concept. Armageddon is World War Three, the final battle, when Jesus steps into human history to save the world.
Are we there yet? Is the end nigh?
Jesus told us “About that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” (Matthew 24: 36). So for sure I don’t know, but we are told to watch the trends; we can recognize the beginning of the end.
That beginning is a rider on a white horse, the first of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse, another popular cultural image. “I looked, and there before me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.” (Revelation 6:4). The other horsemen follow, War, and Famine, and Death. It’s a logical sequence.
The end of history, and the second coming of Jesus will begin when we start “conquering” each other; when we try to score victories against our opponents on a global scale. Humans will bring the end of history, and God will intervene. That’s what the Bible tells us, and that’s the real meaning of Armageddon.
I don’t know today, how the impeachment effort will progress, but it is powered by strong emotions on both sides. In Britain and Europe, Brexit has the same power, and now England and Scotland are on opposite sides. The British union goes back to 1706 and it could end soon.
You might know that there are some other problems in the world with the same epic power. Shia and Sunni Muslims are ready for war, and the fighting has already started in places like Yemen and Syria, and Iraq. Most of the world’s oil comes from that region. There are growing divisions in other places.
No-one pays attention to Canada, except people like me, who live there. We just had an election, and we are now highly polarized, divided into regions that are threatening to separate. And also, there are divisions in Latin America that won’t go away.
There are many players on all sides, and it seems like everyone wants to win, and no-one wants to compromise.
is this Armageddon?
We can’t know, but we can see the trends. We are behaving exactly the way Jesus said we would, in the end. Humans now have the greatest potential for peace and prosperity, in history, and we are divided into uncompromising conquering sides. We all think we can win.
The news today is a picture of our future. The end might come soon, and it will start with us in our conquering divisions, until God makes it right.
