Think money is the answer to all your problems, then think again.

According to a survey by England’s Office for National Statistics (ONS), people living in England believe marriage is one of the important keys to happiness.

For the past eight years, ONS has conducted a annual survey asking people what makes them happy. They are asked to rank answers to several questions on a scale of one to ten rating their sense of fulfillment, life satisfaction and whether they considered their life worthwhile on a variety of issues.

For the past several years, jobs and economic security was one the strongest indicators of happiness and well-being ahead of marriage, but ONS reported a significant change in the past year that showed marriage has now pulled ahead. In the survey conducted between 2017 and 2018, marriage came in second behind a person’s health.

According to the survey, married couples are expressing a 9.9% higher life satisfaction over widows and widowers and 8.8% higher satisfaction than those who are separated or divorced.

So how did singles fare?

According to the survey, they were only marginally happier than divorced coming in with a .2% higher satisfaction ranking.

ONS stated:

“Marital status appears to matter more for people’s life satisfaction than it did six years ago, while economic activity contributed less.”

Perhaps not coincidentally, the ONS reports that divorce rate in England is also falling and currently sits at a 45 year low.

At creation, God said:

18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.” (Genesis 2:18 NASV)

The very next thing that God did after creating man was establish the importance of marriage.  The Hebrew word for good (tôb) includes the concept of “good, beneficial, pleasant, favorable, happy, right.” Yes, it includes the idea of being happy and the word is used in many instances through out the Old Testament to refer to a person’s well-being.

It is also important to note that through the creation story, God repeatedly stated that what He had done was good (Genesis 1:4; 1:10; 1:12; 1:18; 1:25; 1:31). The only thing God classified as “not good” was man living alone. This is how important marriage is in God’s eyes.

Though this is all true, society continues to devalue the importance of marriage.  A survey by Pew Research in 2010 found that 39% of Americans believe marriage is becoming obsolete and that same year the US census bureau reported that marriages made up less than half of households in the US, compared to 78% in 1950.

So what constitutes a marriage? A justice of the peace, priest, pastor, rabbi, Buddhist cleric Hindu priest presiding over a ritual, or is it as simple as living together, with or without God being the center or basis of your relationship?

    • Good question. I am not sure, but I believe God set up marriage at the beginning because it would benefit all people and families, even those who don’t believe it God.
