In Australia there is a disagreement among scientists about global warming and the death of the Great Barrier Reef. Now the ‘disagreement’ has produced threats of firing and career termination for university professors, and lawsuits in court.
I worked in a large university, in Canada, and I know one thing is true; if you want to understand any controversy in the system, just follow the money. You might believe there is a secular world system that stifles all dissenting opinions, including Christians who believe in Jesus; and you might be correct. But, in my experience, the system is supported with taxpayer money, and it is filled with scared people who are counting the days to retirement. The evil world system is imploding with money problems.
In Australia, agriculture and industry and tourism could lose billions, and university professors could lose, or gain millions in grant funding because of the Barrier Reef. That’s the new way to pay for higher education, with funding applications. I understand the fight, even though I have never been to Australia.
“Truth” now has dollar signs attached.

When one of my sons was 16, I got him enlisted in the army reserves. For me, that meant stern discipline from ‘Mother Army’ for a teenage boy, and a part-time job, and a summer job, and rebates on university tuition.
Any father would vote for that.
I didn’t expect him to go into combat on the other side of the world, three times. He is doing very well now, and I support his decisions, but it was a shock to shake my young son’s hand as he got on the deployment bus to fly to a war, far away. I know he was in danger many times there.
I am not disagreeing, but why do governments send young reservists, just out of school, to fight in a war?
They are cheap and wars are expensive.
My career in the university ended with one meeting. Someone from HR slid a paper across a table with this information: they were giving me some money, and paying me for several months, but I could be arrested by security if I came to work, and giving me a small pension for life.
I was too expensive to keep and it was cheaper to buy me out. I am the only one who can defend my reputation now, but my work was good, and I was not fired, technically. I had no power to change the decision, and there was no discussion, but I was permitted to resign. Oh, and the small pension included a “top-up” until I turned 65. Everyone gets that extra money if they retire early. They really want to get expensive people off the payroll.
I also had to sign a promise that I would not slander them. Their reputation is safe with me; I have nothing bad to say about people who give me free money. After that meeting I found another job, and I left the university knowing that Babylon really is imploding.
The Bible describes the true condition of our modern civilization “You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.” (Revelation 3:17)
Those words were written to a Christian church, but they also apply to our secular world today. We are broke, information is something to sell, and the truth belongs to our grandparents. We live in the bankrupt information age and the news always has dollar signs attached.
We are beginning a wild ride, brace yourself.
There is some good news that does not move. We can trust Jesus who said:
I have told you all this so that you won’t lose your faith when you face troubles. People will tell you to leave their synagogues and never come back. In fact, the time will come when they will think that killing you would be doing service for God. They will do this because they have not known the Father, and they have not known me. I have told you all this now to prepare you. So, when the time comes for these things to happen, you will remember that I warned you. (John 16:1 to 4)
I have told you these things so that you can have peace in me. In this world you will have troubles. But be brave! I have defeated the world! (John 16:33)
