In the West, when teaching our children math we have them memorize endless multiplication tables. Multiplication and long division can be a complicated process.

However, there is an ancient way of doing math, that is quite different from the way we do it and in some ways simpler. All you need is the ability to double numbers and basic addition. If you can do that you can easily multiply and divide any set of figures.

Moses grew up in the Pharaoh’s court. The Bible tells us that he learned the wisdom of Egypt. This was undoubtedly the way Moses was taught to multiply and divide.

And after he had been set outside, Pharaoh’s daughter took him away and nurtured him as her own son. 22 Moses was educated in all the learning of the Egyptians, and he was a man of power in words and deeds. (Acts 7:21, 22 NASV)

Though we tend to have a negative view of the Egyptians, because of the way they treated the Israelites, the ancients were capable of some amazing feats and far more advanced than we generally give them credit for.
